would like to get some input on a "not as described" Paypal case

I would like to get some input on a "not as described" PayPal case. I sold an 18K gold necklace off eBay but using PayPal invoice. I told the buyer that he can return the item in a week after he receives it if he doesn't like it, no question will be asked. All he needs to do is telling me that he wants to return the item and I will give him the return address but he has to pay for the return postage and I will refund his payment. He agreed so I sent him the PayPal invoice. After he received the item he sent me an email saying he will return it and will file a PayPal claim to document it. I told him no need to file claim and it will only delay the refund if he file the claim. I told him all he need is to get a tracking number so he can prove that he returned it. I gave him the return address and told him I will refund his payment once I have received the item. He filed the claim anyway. I responded to PayPal saying that I will take the return and the buyer has to pay for the return postage as we agreed. I told PayPal I don't understand why the buyer has to file a claim since I accept return. After my respond the buyer escalated the case and PayPal reviewed it. I guess PayPal asked the buyer to provide prove that the necklace is fake or not 18K. Two days later after PayPal asked for more info from the buyer, the buyer email me accused me making it difficult for him to return. I told him I don't understand why he has to file a claim since I accept the return; I asked why he blames me on his action (file a claim). He is the one making the return difficult. We exchanged couple more “not so nice” emails. Finally I told him please don't email me anymore and I will not reply. Today he emailed me again saying he is sorry that he is not nice........ He asked me to take his return and he will cancel the PayPal claim. I guess he can't provide any prove that the necklace is fake. I kind of the think I should ignore him and let the case run its course but I would like to hear what you guys have to say about it. Should I allow him to return it at this point?

Any chance it could be fake?

No chance. It marked 18K. I got the necklace from HA with a pendant. I took the pendant off and sell the necklace.

Ask PayPal what you should do. But get names time and all that stuff so if it go's south you have foot to stand on, ask him to INS it or it will get lost in the mail and you are out on the item and the money.

I assume you have a photo you took before he bought it. So I am not sure I would let him return it. They sound a bit sketchy.. Some scammers will send a fake (empty) package with a tracking number. Then when you receive it and the package is empty they will claim to Paypal they sent it back and provide a tracking number showing delivery. And Paypal may refund them. You in the meantime are out the item and the money.. Why did they filed a claim with PP? This is puzzling since you offered returns... Ask them that again and again until you get an answer. I don't trust folks like that... Also its off Ebay some protection may be gone. If it is not fake and you have the money, I would say we are done. Now if he does send it back and you get the same necklace back as in the photo, then I would say OK and refund the money. Just my 2 cents. If it is real (and you said it is) the buyer could always sell it...

An antsy buyer on a piece of merchandise that has most of its value locked in its bullion content would make me worry about this transaction, especially if both of you have been "not so nice" already. Good luck on this one and I hope you don't get scammed.

How much is it worth? He might have been worried about sending it back without PayPal watching the return. How did you get to PayPal invoice in the first place? eBay listing that went private?

How does filing a claim hurt you?
Instead of arguing about the claim, I would have just told him he'd get a refund once the item was returned.

I don't I need to ask paypal. Once he cancel it he can't file again. All I want to know is "should I give him another chance".> @Wabbit2313 said:

It is about one K. 100 over the melt price. You can send anyone paypal invoice in your paypal account.

That's what I told him the first time but he file a claim instead. Now paypal holding the fund. The claim will not hurt me.

Never insist on anyone doing anything they think they need to do to feel secure. I never talk anyone out of opening a PayPal case. If you are on the up and up (and it sounds like you are) it is what you pay the 3% for. Let them do their job. On the other hand, had he just said "Hey I am returning it and here is the Tracking" I would refund him his money once I got the item back. They are the customer, no matter how weird it may sound, once you try and redirect, you are lost.

I understand that, I send them all the time. Was it originally an eBay transaction that you moved to PayPal to save the fees? If so, he might be a bit suspicious anyway. If not, then you must have known the guy somehow in order to send an invoice. For some reason, he is uncomfortable returning it without PayPal having his back.
