Great collections vs heritage/stacks 10k coin

GazesGazes Posts: 2,315 ✭✭✭✭✭
I think all three auction houses do a great job. But I am trying to figure the best place for a coin like a 1916-d fb au 58 pcgs cac (assume it's solid for the grade). It's about a 10k coin. Would one better with heritage/stacks with their numerous deep pocket bidders and sales machine or great collections with no seller fees and lower buyer commission? Thanks

I would go with the auction house with the most exposure - or, as my friends call it:
The only 800 pound Gorilla in the room !! - ie: Heritage. JMHO.

As I have learned over the years, there are ways around the seller fees, I used to consign
my coins thru a few dealers who would be able to give me hammer plus a small percentage.

Check around - or PM me if you'd like to discuss more in detail.

Take out the 18% buyer's fee and the 10% sellers fee and you will not be doing as well as you think at HA. With one coin, they will most likely charge you that sellers fee. I think that is ridiculous and they pulled that on me once and I never went back.

Ya Ya, some will chime in that they don't pay that, but for a single coin, lower value, chances are you will. (10K is not a large value for those folks)

Wabbit. I would be happy to place the OP's coin in a major sale at Stacks or Heritage for 0 sellers fee. I do it all the time for board members. Wondercoin.

Cool. This is good to know! I am still not a huge fan of that 18% but it is what it is.

I've never paid a seller fee with HA when going through a dealer (and I won't even mention buyers fees) image

Why not try to sell it retail first? You'd be surprised what people will buy from the BST, and there's no commission. Also, if it's something nice, you might easily do better selling it to a dealer than taking a 17.5% auction hit.

Auctions are for people who have to sell, or who don't have time to do the legwork on their own.

If I had 10K I would buy it from you and save us both the fees.

You could check around for straight offers; I'm not sure what the offers would be, but if it is pq maybe they would be near the auction hammer price without the six month or longer wait for auction and payment. I used to get strong offers on popular coins with the wholesalers.

You forgot one. For a coin like that, Legend would give you hammer +7.5%

    Doubt you can beat it

I really like Ian and GC but for high end coins, you want the photography and lot description to be top notch.

I'd expect you should find more than 1 main stream auction house that would give you hammer +5.75% for a $10K coin. That's 90% net. I've never paid a seller's fee. And my lowest net after all fees has never been under 90% for the past 12 years.

It appears that auction houses give special offers to higher tier customers, which they should. Heritage won't even give me the time of day with the high end (top pop) varieties that I have been trying to sell. I just received a ridiculously low offer yesterday from one of the high profile stealers (dealer) who claim to pay top dollar. Heck they did not even offer a fair price for a "regular strike" coin let alone the attributed variety or the green bean. Moving on.

If I were you I would go with the legend offer. I really like there sales: Nice catalog, have a great customer base, straight up folks, and they(and there customers) like nice coins.

I have thought about it a great deal, if I ever part with my personal collection, I am going to have Legend sale it in one of their regency auctions.

I'd say, figure out what the coin is worth to you and set a corresponding opening bid for GC. You could have it sold in less than a month and get paid in less than two months. If it doesn't sell, you're only out $10 plus the cost of shipping both ways. Drop off and/or pick up the coin in person and you can even save the shipping expense.

    Let the bidding begin.
  • If you want TOP DOLLAR, Legend is the way to go, but they will only take your coin if it is PQ.
