  I'd say the top one is "Type of 1840", and the second one is "Head of 1838"

  Pretty sure they're neither a "Booby Head", nor a "Silly Head", though I like those terms.

  I completely concur with what Tommy just said. Nice looking coins. Including the 1839 over 6 (which has not been mentioned here in this thread) there are 5 Redbook varieties.

  This is correct....the Head of 1840 is also called the Petite Head, with the Mature Head appearing in 1843 and staying through 1857. The Silly Head, Booby Head, and '39/6 all have their own distinctions.

  Note the difference in the curls above the date. There are many other differences too. E.g., the hair below LIBERTY and at the ear. The longer you compare them the more distinctions you will see.
