1986 Fleer Bkball LCS Common Shopping (7 More Cards Bought Update)

My LCS apparently recently bought a mostly complete 86 Fleer bkball set. I'm very slowly building a PSA 9 set, so a good opportunity to go through it and cherry pick the commons (plus isiah thomas). Was a nice time going through the 100-110 cards they had. I tried to buy only what had a shot a 9, and i think a couple have an outside chance at a 10. I got the 9 cards for about $45 total with Isiah so not a bad deal. We shall see...

It's a sad day when Moses Malone is a "common."

Thanks! And no disrespect to Moses! I know he's a hof'er, but a common as a 11th year grizzled vet!

Those all look very sharp. Can't tell with pictures always but they all look to have strong chances at getting 9's. My prediction is that you will come out way ahead in this transaction. It baffles me how card shop owners leave so much money on the table not grading cards themselves. I understand the desire to turn over inventory quickly and not tie up capital in grading fees. But if that Isiah RC gets a 9 it will basically more than cover your purchase of the lot and all the grading fees. If it pulls a 10, it's a $1k card. It reminds me of Nathan's recent purchase of a raw MJ Fleer RC from a card shop that had it on consignment. It looked to be in very high grade condition. The shoo sold it to Nathan raw on the contingency that it get a numeric grade. Well it got a BGS 9.5 grade. I mean that is collectible malpractice on the part of the shop owner and it cost his consignor about $15k probably. Anyway, rant over. Congrats on finding some thirty year old gems and good luck with your sub. Show us the grades with some scans when they pop. I think you will do well.

This is exactly why I still have a couple of card shops still around.
I spend much more there than I do online. And they do grade cards and sell online.
My biggest hits have been raw and unopened buys from them. They know what I like and what I am looking for.
I would never be able to buy what I do there if it was graded. Or even compete with bidders if it was online.
    Yes, 'Beckett' pricing still exists.
It is either old inventory that they just stumbled upon or something that they just picked up.
So quick flip or free money to them works and they are happy.
Nothing beats walking in and hearing "Hey! Look what I found for you".
Or even "This just came in, I put it aside for you".
Most cant say that they have a LCS even remotely close to them, I am very fortunate and support them all the way
If they wanted to be cardsharks and grade everything and price like ebay, they very well just shut their doors

    so minor update:

Went back to the shop mostly b/c I ended up seeing that a checklist (which I knew was a huge psa 10 card) is still like a $100 psa 8 card. I remember it being OC so I passed originally, but want to go see it again. Unfortunately it was gone, and a couple of others, but most were left. Did a second round of reviews and picked up these 8 additional for $20 total. Some nice looking cards in here, how about the centering on the Alvin Robertson for example?

  • slum22slum22 Posts: 2,594 ✭✭✭✭
The centering on the Robertson is excellent. Good luck with your subs, if you hit 9's on most you will make out great, even 8's will largely recoup your minimal investment. The L. Thompson is a low pop common and if you get a 9 on that one can be about a $75-100 card, so potentially a nice return. Other commons to look for are Alvan Adams, Blackmon, S. Johnson, Lloyd, Lucas, J. Malone, J. Moore, B. Scott. These are potentially $100 commons in 9 (some a little less, some a little more).

Wow! You did great. Congrats on the Isiah 9. That alone puts you ahead. The Gem 10's are also great hits but the next biggest card could be the Lasalle Thompson 9. As I wrote previously that is a pretty low pop card so that is a nice hit. Congrats on the terrific pickups. You've got a great eye! You are well on your way to a high grade set with this sub. Are you building the set already or do you have plans to? An incredible percentage of 9's and 10's. Congrats again!

    Thanks guys!

Slum, I've accumulated before this about 15 graded cards including a couple of bigger ones (MJ 9, and Barkley 10) and a couple of random common 10s. I think with these I'm now going to formally go after the set. I haven't ever set up a registry set, but think I will now (uh oh!).

Tempted to go back now one again to my LCS and take one more look at the final scraps left in case I missed anything

    Great story!

Amazing a card dealer sold these so cheap. Just goes to show you how out of touch many of them really are.

One dealer undersold, so many are out of touch.

There are countless stories of dealers who have little to no interest in card grading. It makes absolutely no sense if that is your primary business.

  • LarkinCollectorLarkinCollector Posts: 8,975 ✭✭✭✭✭
Buy low, sell for a quick profit w/o waiting months to come back in slabs and tying up capital. Might not maximize profits, but still sounds in touch to me.
  • travis ttravis t Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭
I guess the point is that a single representation should not speak for the masses. Of course, there are plenty of irresponsible dealers who don't expend enough effort to maximize their capital gains.

But, there are plenty more who do. How the heck else would they stay in business?
  • Dpeck100Dpeck100 Posts: 10,912 ✭✭✭✭✭
Wow this deal is even better for the OP than I realized. Isiah a $200 card alone.

Further reinforces why so many card shops go out of business.

Really smart to sell raw blazers from the most actively collected set from all genres of trading cards. LOL

Hi guys, so a few weeks ago, I did one more sweep of the cards left at my LCS. I think this is the end of it now.

The Rivers and Willis I think are chances at a 10 and were skipped my originally b/c they were priced higher at $6 each b/c they were "rookies". The others are likely in the 9 category.

And yes, now I'm officially addicted! Picked up a few common 10s from a board member. Still have to create my first registry page, but probably about 30 - 35 cards now in with the LCS ones, plus the cards in my collection from before.

Travis and Dpeck, to your neutral cornersimage Let's keep this thread focused about Matt's cards. Realistically, you guys are both right and arguing different points. David, go back to my first post in this thread and you will see my thoughts align with yours about how some card shop owners miss opportunities by forgoing TPG'ing. I certainly understand the rationale of wanting to turn product over and not tie up money waiting for grading turnaround, but a little research would show this to have been a low risk opportunity. The case where 1980's Collector turned a raw 86 Fleer MJ RC into a BGS 9.5 was even more egregious as the risk/reward of grading that card was so in favor of grading that it boggles the mind that a "professional" in the industry would simply ignore it. In this case, we are talking about the difference of probably hundreds of dollars in profit vs. thousands in the case of the Jordan RC. I believe though, that Travis' point is simply not to speak in generalizations as we are talking about two examples of dealers, so it is a little presumptive to lump "all" or "most" dealers into this category based on a small sample size. Anyway...

Matt, congrats on scoring more pickups. They all look great. I hope your grades turn out similar to your first sub. I will caution one thing, try to temper expectations. Especially with this set, it is hard to predict if your card will be lucky enough to procure a 10 no matter how deserving. There's times when it seems like it can be a bigger challenge to get the grade your card deserves than finding the card itself. The Rivers and Willis can very well be deserving of 10's but could easily still be 9's based on the opinion of the grader. The Lucas is the big pick up in this second round. If you get a 9 with it (looks like a strong possibility) that is likely a $80-100 card. Good luck!

    - oh I know. any 10s will be a success. I grabbed the lucas b/c you pointed it out. It was the only of the tougher common remaining that wasn't an 8. Feel good about this lot except for the Paxson's centering. I remember I got it since it really was 50/50 L/F with good corners and no chipping.
