QUESTIONS AND COMMENTARY THREAD: CU Forum BBCE National Break News - Late 70s Sealed Cases Reserve

RESERVATION/REQUEST THREAD POSTED - OPENS 9PM TONIGHT!!!
Please post anything other than requests (e.g. questions) into this thread so we keep the other thread easier to process. THANKS!
QUESTION 1: Why are there 8 boxes worth of slots for the rack cases when they only have 6 boxes each?
ANSWER: Figured that it would be easier (and give more people a chance) if I show four full box slots for each from the start so that the positions can be claimed. If we only end up with 2 full boxes on each then the first 2 get them. If we end up with more then we don't have a mad scramble, conditional requests (i.e. if there is one more box I'll take it) or upset people who passed because the 2 slots were already taken who would not have passed if they saw more slots originally.
It's a pretty safe bet we'll get at least 2 boxes in each year reserved individually so that's why I show 4 full box slots.
QUESTION 2: I hit "enter" just as the clock turned 9PM but my posting is time-stamped at 8:59PM. Am I still first in line, or is my request invalid?
ANSWER: Wish I had better news, but I was explicit in the rules that the time-stamp of the postings would be used as the only basis for determining valid/invalid requests. That made it a bit more challenging for anyone to "time" their request to the head of the line.
Over the years doing these breaks we have found that trying for full transparency, creating rules that prevent anyone from getting an unfair advantage and trying to give lots of notice are the keys to making them happen smoothly. There have been several breaks where those aspects were overlooked, leaving a large number of the members of the community really upset because they got shut out.
I'm really sorry that you have an 8:59PM time-stamp, but if we didn't go by the explicit time-stamp rule I provided we would end up with all sorts of arguments from people on either side of "the bubble".
For what its worth my own rack box request is pretty low (#4 for 1978) on the list and my time-stamp is 9:00PM after I waited an extra 15 seconds after my PC said 9PM in hopes of avoiding the 8:59PM time-stamp. I was successful in my effort, but perhaps if I had been 5 seconds sooner I would have been #3? It's the luck of the draw, but it applies to everyone equally...even me.

Well it has been a very lucky day indeed for the members of this forum who like to participate in unopened breaks.
Steve Hart has reserved for us several late 1970s cases. He could have kept them out for sale during the show, but instead he offered to pull them from the show and hold them for us to break.
Here is what will be available to break:
1977 Topps Baseball Wax Case (16 boxes) - Sealed, $111.12/pack and $4000/box (36 packs). Will be marked FASC.
1978 Topps Baseball Rack Case (6 boxes) - Sealed, $145.84/pack and $3500/box (24 packs).
Will be marked FASC.
1978 Topps Baseball Cello Case (15 boxes) - Not Sealed, $44.45/pack and $1066.67/box (24 packs). Will NOT be marked FASC.
1979 Topps Baseball Rack Case (6 boxes) - Sealed, $108.34/pack and $2600/box. Will be marked FASC.
WRAPPING COSTS AND SHIPPING COSTS ARE TO BE ADDED ON TOP OF THESE PRICES.
Items will be offered as individual packs and full boxes, with individual pack requests being given first priority when grouped as part of a full box, and full box requests then getting priority.
Example
If there are 76 packs requested and 16 full boxes requested for the 1977 wax boxes then 2 boxes (72 packs) will be used to fulfill the first 72 pack requests and the remaining boxes will be used to fulfill the first 14 box requests. This way people at both ends of the buying spectrum can participate.
We will use standard forum rules for the break. I'll post them in the reservation thread. I will get the break started on Sunday evening at 9PM EST. No reservation requests time stamped before 9PM will be honored.
Get psyched! When was the last time we had this much FASC material available to break?

Yes indeed. Same thought.

The biggest lesson I've learned in this hobby, and in life, is that if you have a strong conviction, you owe it to yourself to see it through. Don't sell yourself, or your investments, short. Unless the facts change. Then sell it all.
Collecting Unopened from '72-'83; mostly BBCE certified boxes/cases/racks.
Prefer to buy in bulk.
Awesome Dave. Do I have to be in AC for this? I'm in on one or two 77 boxes and a 79 rack box. Assuming all FASC
No, the break is open to all CU members. Live thread will be started Sunday evening at 9 pm. No reservations are accepted until that time. Reservations for individual packs will be given priority status with full box reservations being taken for any boxes left after those slots have been filled.

Let's say you really want a box...but that may not happen, so you have to commit to individual packs to be sure you're not empty handed, correct?
I believe you can reserve both if you want to, but the full boxes won't be reserved unless all packs in the case are reserved individually.

Very nice, David! Is the 78 cello not a sealed case?
The case is not sealed but all boxes are marked FASC.
I'm thrilled to see this break happening, great work David!
do a good time. Once again this proves that Steve is a class act!!

What does the S in FASC stand for?
He's selling a 1977 wax box for $3300 at the Natty as an alternative. I still can't afford one.
When will we know if all boxes don't sell out to order packs, and what's the pack limit? Fun fun.

Presumably it was sealed before the boxes were wrapped?

It means "Sealed" as in the case the box came out of was factory sealed until the box was taken out by BBCE, labeled and wrapped.
I'll add that I just saw the prices listed by the OP of this thread and OMG!
The last FASC rack box from 1979 sold for $3299 on eBay. These prices are a steal. Especially considering we may NEVER see a 1970s case break ever again on CU.
I wish the break rules would let me put down for a box of everything as I'd be all over that!

This would indicate that boxes are not labeled FASC. Unless I am missing something?

As for ripping I'd say this is the best "honest" opportunity you'll find ever again at such a low price.
If you check eBay you'll see 4 '79 racks for sale, all with low to poor front centering. Same goes for the last 24 or so that sold. As Grote pointed out sequence does break, however, having 2 or even 3 panels with poorly centered cards front facing will almost always doom you to cards that won't be worth sending in, because of centering, even if all other attributes are pristine.
Quality vs quantity my friends.
Will post the request thread Sunday afternoon and then any request timestamped after 9pm EDT is valid.
Reasonable limits per item will apply every 48 hours (probably 1 box, 4 racks and 4 cellos per person per item).
Priority will go to the individual packs and racks over the boxes as long as they constitute a full box (so if you are
cello/rack #1-23 in a box that is not completely requested then a full box request will move ahead in priority).
Unfortunately we can't accommodate conditional requests (e.g. If I get the box I don't want the packs/racks).
It's just too hard to re-juggle things once the requests start lining up.
Remember, the idea here is to enable participation at all levels by as many people who are interested as possible.
Consider this to be National BBCEmania....Its not BBCE at National, but an incredible simulation....(credit to the

Will be marked FASC.
Looks like maybe a slight math error on this one?
$3599 per box would come to $149.96 per pack?
In any case, what a great opportunity.
For those individual rack packs that are "wrapped", will they be labelled "FASC"? I'm guessing the answer is no, as I've never seen an individual pack wrapped that way, but it sure seems to make sense (at least to me. . .).
So perhaps a strange question . . .

If I remember correctly, the last time the guys here did a sealed rack case break the packs were labeled FASC.

Yes, they were. Of course, the significance is not as great as it is with a case or a box FASC where the contents are unknown.

Good catch! My fat thumbs on the iPhone keypad hit 9s instead of 0s.
Box price now corrected to $3500

Side note...I've never done a box/case break with y'all. When we reserve our spots, are we reserving the spot where our pack/box is? For example, if I got a 78 cello pack or 79 rack, would my number/place dictate which pack in the box I get?
Lastly, are the case and box breaks gonna be streamed online from Steve's?
Over triple the cost in 4 years. Does that mean to buy one in another 4 years, you'd have to drop 10k?

The slots are completely random. Packs are pulled from the boxes as payments come in and orders are shipped.
No online streaming, as far as I know.

Just a thought, but might want to make the reservation period on packs a little more than 48 hours? Something tells me there could be strong demand for packs, and on the rack cases that could really limit the boxes available at the end.
Might even want to consider a "random" on the box reservations, as opposed to a rush to the forum to post?
Jus something to think about.

Good thoughts. Will try to find the ever-elusive "happy medium" so that people interested in boxes do not get shut out. It's always a challenge with such limited product available.

Dave
Question on the 78 cellos. Did Steve open these boxes and does he think they are original boxes? As in there will be some packs with stars showing. I realize it is not from a sealed case but does he believe these are unaltered boxes from that case?
As best I know they are believed to be original boxes. It's just that the case was no longer sealed. They are not believed to be picked through.
If anyone has better information than that please post it to this thread.

I thought you were mistaken about the price of the 77 wax packs, but
I found my old receipt and I bought 8 of them and the cost was right at
$29 apiece counting shipping.
For some reason I was thinking they were around $45. LOL.
I opened two of those packs and still have six left.
Did get a Johnny Bench psa 8.
Looks like some nice stuff regardless.
