How can I determine a Market Value for a Scarce or Rare Trade Dollar variety?

What seems like a pretty scarce/rare variety of Trade dollar came over the transom today.



it is:



1875-S Micro S Trade Dollar, with a Type 2 Reverse.



VP-003

Breen-5795.



It is in an NGC AU55 holder.



This is apparently the only one NGC has graded in any grade.



Are there enough collectors out there to make this worth much of a premium?

    You can do some perusing on Heritage. These have traded publicly (and unattributed) in the past.

    There is a minor premium attached, at least according to public records - it seems to be approximately 10-15% for VF/XF coins. I imagine that a similar premium would be attached to the coin in question. A really choice AU58 may see a larger premium.

    Some T$ varieties are peculiar in pricing structure - i.e. there's a grade threshold at which prices begin to skyrocket. For example the 75CC 1/2 is only valuable as a variety in UNC, and there is a significant boost in value.

    Of course, the trouble is always finding a collector ....... image

    I respectfully disagree, but it looks like you will be willing to give Dave the 10-15%+ premium, I would not and there is absolutely no reason to do so. It is absolutely undeserving and really just perpetuating what someone told you years ago imho.

    If you just do as I suggested and take a look, you'll see that I'm no jester. I haven't a clue who's paying this premium, but it doesn't change the fact that said premium exists.

    Whether or not the premium is justified is not within the scope of this thread, and thus was not addressed in my response.

    This is the type of variety that you can sell for a premium to the right buyer. However, you may need to be patient for that right buyer to come along. It's a scarce variety, especially in that grade with hardly any Unc examples known.



    If I hadn't just picked a borderline Unc example, I'd be calling you up. Good luck, whatever you decide to do with it.

    While true not many would go for the variety label, the coin is not common.

    If it's a scarce or rare variety, one only needs the market to determine the value of a coin's worth. This place determines the value of man's worth.

    I thought this thread was dead yesterday -- asked and answered.



    I guess there might be more to it.



    Based on the differing advice, I will likely have a friend put it on eBay at no reserve and let the chips fall where they may.



    By the way -- this thread was in no way a solicitation to sell it.



    I was merely asking for advice about an area I know little about.

    auctions are the correct answer, sir, especially for coins with unknown premiums. the free market always decides.

    Also, picked up an 1877 TRADE DOLLAR, DOUBLE DIE OBVERSE, and again not much premium though tougher according to research.
