I have no idea what my IQ is, but I'm smart enough to know that there is no test that can measure every type of intelligence.

Actually, I know of a frequent poster here who was a 5 time winner on Jeopardy. And that was at the time when you could only win 5 times max.

And even more surprising to some... he is a dealer.

Mine was 135 the last time I had it checked. I bet most of the ones below 100 won't reply to this thread, throwing off the survey results.

Never had an IQ test but I did get a full academic scholarship which paid for my bachelors and masters degrees in engineering (years ago) so I was at least smart enough to not incur any crippling student loans.

The average IQ is 122 for coin people. It's higher for stamp people, but don't tell them.

  • It's definitely higher than the average, though it doesn't reflect the 100% true statistics of how smart you are, it's more about how good you can solve certain kind of tasks

Average IQ of coin collectors? Here on the forum, those attending the summer ANA seminars, or those at the local flea market?

What about coin vault regulars ? People who buy colorized silver eagles or gold plated state quarter aficionados ? If we stir that lot into the mix we are going to dip below room temperature.

Indeed! I don't even believe there is such a thing as "intelligence" in the sense that people usually define it. We are simply mistaking artefacts of language and an event I call "cleverness" as a condition we believe is intelligence.

The closest thing in reality to "intelligence" is speed of thought and even the slowest people experience cleverness; just less often, less accurately, and more slowly.

I believe, based on memory, that genius is 150. I think, again from memory, that that's the IQ required for MENSA membership. I belive that they do take some standardized test scores (MCAT, GRE, etc) as surrogates for an IQ test for membership. So, I think that you're correct.

I'd totally guess the average IQ of avid collectors is about 115 or a bit higher. Above average.

I think that that avid coin collectors have far more general knowledge than the average person as they, as others have pointed out, seem to have interests far beyond simply collecting. One learns a lot about history, technology, etc from collecting.

Given the breadth of knowledge needed, the speed that one has to think about the game and to answer, I think that it's a safe bet that a 5 time Jeopardy champion has a genius (150) IQ. That would be an interesting thing for a psychology post doc or someone similar to study.

  • There are different IQ tests with differing standard deviations. Usually it is close to 15.

Mensa accepts members at the 98 percental or IQ = 130 (One Stanford Binet test is 132 required, Cattel is 148).
Triple Nine society 99.9 percental requires an IQ of 146 (if standard deviation is 15)
