The PCGS # doesn't come up. 80641051 comes back as not available to display. If you change the last digit to a 7 as it's not 100% clear as to what the PCGS # is, that # comes back to a 1863 Confederate note. Something fishy here....

I'm hoping that Jason will chime in before to long to explain this holder deal. I believe the holder associated with this note indicates the note was sent in for grading and was returned as an altered note, either intentional or otherwise. The seller should certainly know this if they were indeed the individual that submitted it to PCGS. It is possible the seller was duped by the original submitter.

    Is there a 97 code (I won't call it a grade)?

It's been a while, but someone posted this note on the forum asking if it was a legitimate error. The consensus was no way Jose ...it was at least a year ago.

I suspect the "code 97" means it will not be graded as it is altered.

"97" is the code for "Environmental Damage" on a note that is not gradable. Other commonly used codes include 87 for Questionable Authenticity, 90 for Not Genuine, 94 for Altered Surface, and 99 for PVC Damage. We have to have some way of easily tracking these types of notes (not least in case we receive it for grading again later down the road), and so a code number, not in the 1 to 70 range, in place of the grade is used to designate notes that are not assigned a grade for some reason or another.
