How would you price a rare pattern coin that hadn't sold for many years?

Speaking of a j-123 restrike. Last 2 in PR 64 sold for 2,000-2300 in 1999. Any guess where it would be in today's market?

If you mean the 1850 copper-nickel you might try

Heritage Auctions Archive. They handle pattern coins also.

Did you try E-bay? They might have a chinese version. 8)

Bowers & Merena had one J-123 in auction in 5/1999.

HA has auctioned 4 from J-119 to J-122, but they

don't come up in the archive.

Some of these were probably restrikes.

Coinfacts has an example of a copper J-122 in their 1850 pattern

I bought the J-123 Restrike in the Bowers and Merena auction of 5-99. I think that was the Bass collection auction because I remember buying 2 patterns from the Bass auction. In any case, the coin is ex-Bass and its grade PR 64. For what it's worth, I paid $2,070. Currently PCGS values the coin at $4500. I have NO idea how they arrived at their current value.

The one I might buy is a proof 63 in an old PCGS holder.

I don't know much about patterns, although I like many of them. But I think there's a very thin market for them, with a very small collector base...I think it comes down to 1) Do you like the coin, and 2) Can you afford the asking price. I don't think you'll have much else to base your decision on besides the answers to those two questions. FWIW, if it were me and if the answer to both questions was yes, I'd buy the coin.

Snow-PT1c) Copper nickel. Proof. High R7. {J-123, P-138}

Very few are known. Probaly only three struck. For unperforated examples, see PT2c.

1) PR-64 PCGS. Farouk; Sotheby’s “Palace collection” 3/54:1738; New England Rare Coin Galleries NERGC 3/82:1953;

B&M 5/99:1.

2) PR-64 PCGS. Farouk; Sotheby’s “Palace collection” 3/54:1738; Stack’s 8/76:3534; Stack’s 12/80:403.

3) AU-58 PCGS. (NERCG) 11/77:788.

-) Loy Lauder; Doyle galleries 12/83:480.

I would say it is a $3,000 coin in MS63.
