Lousy pictures on ebay

Are frustrating. You see the potential in a coin, but the images are lousy scans, overexposed, oversharpened, fuzzy wuzzy, or just plain awful. Most of the time I pass when I see rotten images because you can't tell what the problems might be with the coin. I never understand why when someone is selling a coin for $100s to $1000s, they can't take the time to produce great images - these days it is crucial - unless they have something to hide on the coin. Nevertheless, sometimes I will take a gamble if the seller has a good return policy.

Here is one I took a chance on 1814 P40 Dime

The images are atrocious - looks like the coin has strongly corroded surfaces. But looking at the slab images not sure if they are, and looks like some nice toning and it is in a P40 holder. So I took a chance. My images below. Looks like the seller images are way over sharpened with too much contrast giving them a grainy look. So I think I did okay with this one.

In the scheme of eBay pictures, those are not bad pics at all. I'd say they are probably in the top 50% of eBay pics...sadly.

image btw would you please point out where you saw corrosion in the bay photo?

Real One - the surfaces in the ebay images are all grainy, could reflect 'rough' surfaces which could reflect corrosion was what I was thinking. But in hand, it is clear the images have either oversharpening or amping the contrast too high during processing. The surfaces in hand just don't have that roughness, and more consistent with the slab images in the listing, which is why I took the chance.

Heck yes, haven't you seen the moon pictures? Where the coin is 1% of the shot (and out of focus to boot).

I would rather buy from his images than the beauty shot above. Too many times color and lighting are enhanced and a coin looks rainbow toned lovely only to arrive a dark ugly clunker!

See nothing wrong with those pics. Actually quite good. Go to a show and buy sight seen then.

I assume most of the good picture comments are coming from those that did not go to eBay and look at the sellers pics? The one above is clearly not the eBay sellers image.

I'll give the seller credit for showing the coin under different lighting conditions, which in the aggregate I think represent it fairly well. I don't think buying it was really that much of a shot in the dark, but I'm still glad it turned out OK. Great looking dime!
