    But which set is better?

A great many high-end sets have nothing but ugly "barley-made-the-grade" coins in them.

Too bad your set is not public. Would be nice to see the actual coin differences that make for this discrepant ordering.

This same effect caused the "Greenbrier" Liberty Nickel collection to fall to number 2 at the deadline last year. That has been rectified by adding even better coins for this year.

Several of my coins are Epstein coins. I also feel some of the Epstein coins were overgraded, and not truly 68's. I also hurt myself by owning a pop 1, and then making another one. I now have both pop 2/0 coins, but lost a point because I made the second one, LOL.

I don't particularly like the TruView images of copper small cents. The technique just doesn't capture the true beauty of the coins.

How about this 1878? One of my favorites.

Here's the thing. NGC is actually a better scoring system for the high grade Registry coins because it goes by value - which encompasses the rarity by grade. PCGS has always just set a basic date weighting that may or may not accurately reflect the availability of a specific date in a specific grade. The top pop bonus makes up some of that discrepancy as the top pops tend to be valued higher - and should be scored higher.

I'm assuming with copper being softer than nickel but does the 1908 have softer details than the 1878? This appears so from the pictures. Were all Indian head centers made from one set of master hubs?

Leo, you just have to see them in person. I don't like TruView on these coins. Over the next few months, I'm going to be working on photographing them myself. They look similar to this one that I took years ago. I've just gotten away from taking my own pictures in the last few years.

    I don't do the Registry.

I already know people have more money than I do.

Easy solution to that decision. Look at both coins you made and pick the one you like the least. Crack it out and send the insert back to PCGS. That will be removed from the population and you will have top pop again and still have both coins, knowing what PCGS would grade the raw one.

Why not make your set public? I don't get "private" sets -- if you build a set like that, others want to see. If you post a complaint about scoring differences, etc. we can only make informed comments if we can actually compare the two sets. C'mon!

I agree. Make it public and get it photographed. My humble set ranked 14th and just 16% red.

Sorry to hijack this thread Mr. Wright but it got me thinking. I do like the registry and have a MPL set. I haven't paid attention for a while so I went to look to see how the bonus affected my set since I have a 1/0 and a 2/0 coin (both RB). When I noticed I wasn't receiving the bonus points I sent a quick email to CS. I was informed that even though they are top pops, because they are RB, all Red coins trump them.....

I am a huge koolaid drinker but this makes little sense to me. According to the rule, if there was just 1 red coin (let's call it a PR 60 RD for this argument) it would preclude a 1/0 PR 67 RB from a top pop bonus.

Point # 2 - this rule holds true for the "colorless" MPL set as well where color is not supposed to matter.

    I welcome a spirited discussion.

from working with top-set registry people, i was informed it is mostly so others cannot see which coins are needed to "outscore" coins they have and they often keep quiet, upgrades they get for the registry deadline

also, some people are the private type.

i would love it if the sets were public only but it isn't up to me.

i do find humor in it all and enjoy the banter surrounding top sets; and low sets and middle sets. image

Even understanding the difficulty of imaging copper, love the two you posted DMWJR !

I'm guessing the difference between yours and the Epstein set is like picking between two beautiful sunsets.
Not much point, just enjoy both of them.
