I added one of my favorite DDO's. The 1873 DDO. This is a very crusty old Seated Dime.

You can view the whole set as is by using the link in my sig line....thanks for looking.

Congrats. You should change the label on the graphic for the sake of correctness though...

"Doubled Die Obverse" or "Doubled Die Obv" or just DDO...but not what is there currently. image

I know I wouldn't mind seeing the coin again. It sure is impressive if I recall.

If you scroll down in THIS THREAD, you will see what I believe is the Amazing Simpson MS61 example.

I believe it may be a wholesome pcgs au58 nicely toned for the finest known slot, but I could be wrong. May not be the highest graded but I think finest known is more meaningful since accurate grading is so elusive and ngc seems so loose/inconsistent.

I cherrypicked the coin you are describing and sold it to Gerry Fortin, it was raw and had a pretty large hit on the reverse that probably kept it from ever being dipped out and submitted. Gerry was the one who got it graded, it really is a gorgeous example. This was my picture from when I briefly owned it, Gerry has much better ones on his site.

But it seems Simpson (assuming it was Simpson's at one time btw) often went for the highest graded blast white examples and not for the real finest known which to me would be better a lower grade with natural toning and original surfaces and eye appeal. So while the ms61 may be technically the highest graded and remember it is in the looser ngc holder Sean's ex coin seems prettier albeit for the hit. That being said I guess you can say for the specialist being able to see the variety i.e. the DDO in all its glory is very cool and one can see it easier on the ms61 than Seans for sure but I still believe most appreciate a naturally toned and more eye appealing example more as opposed to the untoned ms61 ngc.

    Just my 2c once again.

A large hit is not eye appealing to me.

Dark crusty black toning that has eaten through any luster layer that

may have been there is also not attractive to me. I just see a damaged

coin there, nothing wholesome about it. To each their own.

    realone,

I stand corrected - my former coin graded AU55 at PCGS, Gerry Fortin has better pictures of it on his site here. On that page Gerry mentions the following in his write up for the variety: "Presently, I am aware of two coins in AU or higher grade with fully original surfaces; one sits in the Eugene Gardner collection, the other in a PCGS registry set."

Ok, I can see where you might be right in your assessment. I just hate critiquing a photo and not the coin in hand. The so-called ex Simpson is untoned which usually means it has been dipped and I prefer toned original silver coins over untoned dipped albeit properly dipped all day long. I do appreciate however that with the ms61 you can definitely see the doubling everywhere it appears easily and enjoyably if there is such a wordimage

I understand your side as well! The MS61 could be allowed to retone a little but it is unlikely that this will ever be done. Hurry, the forum people are not 100% thrilled with the photos of examples we have to look at, someone go Cherrypick a PCGS MS67 example... image

It can retone if the owner cracks it out and allows for it. My guess is that the owner would be unlikely to do that.
