Best way to nicely contact ebay seller?

So,

If you ordered something on ebay and, when you opened it up, packaging had an issue and you have to contact seller to rectify it....what's the best way?

I haven't sold coins, or anything, on ebay for a few years, and the options have changed.

I am wary of coming out on the wrong foot. If the seller wants to make things right, I am open to that (I won't bear any expense out of my own pocket though). If the seller wants it returned, on their dime, I am fine with that.

I just don't want to use eBay's "contact seller", with the choices they have, if it automatically dings the seller before I even have a chance to explain the problem.

If it makes any difference, seller charged ~$18 shipping that I paid, so it isn't like I went cheap or he necessarily went cheap.....package was box in a box and still had some damage (out box wasn't ultra sturdy). And, I won't be eating that shipping charge on any return......

Thanks

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Use the "ask a question" link on the auction page.

From your Purchase History click on the sellers name. That will display their main screen with FB and have Contact in the upper right corner. Click on that.

    The top option should be:
( ) I have a question about using my item or I want to send the seller a message

Select that and type your message.

I usually open with something positive, like "Thank you for your fast shipping on this item, unfortunately..."

And then describe your issue and what you want done. If they don't resolve it, you can always contact them again except select:

( ) I need to return my item

    Thanks.

There are new options since I last used them (about 5 years ago) and I thought I remember someone saying that a couple of the options would open a strike/case against the seller. That wasn't my intention.

I did find the "contact seller" earlier, but wasn't sure if the "have a question" was appropriate after the unit was received (I don't want to give up any of my rights with ebay).

Asking a question doesn't give up any rights for other actions.

Box inside a box and the item was affected? I think that might be the Post Offices fault rather than the Sellers. Seems that he/she did things right but then again, I don't know what the item was.

Still, on it's face I'd be likely to think the Post Office was more responsible.

If you do what you always did, you get what you always got.

It is the seller's responsibility to package his items in a way that they arrive intact and undamaged. Shipping anything involves risk of damage and the shipper has to take that into consideration.

    All glory is fleeting.

Was the item damaged, or just the box?

Quite simple. If you paid with PayPal there should be an email address associated with the payment. Contact them through that.

Maybe you can get a new box from the seller?

    Item was not 100%.

Box even less so.....and I don't care about the box....it was just the first sign and super noticeable....
