The OFFICIAL CARD SHOP BY STATE thread

It may catch on, or it may not, but I thought it would be better than endless threads about board members looking for card shops in certain area of the US.

I will start it off by recommending a shop American Legends in Scarsdale N.Y. Also, Sports Heroes and Legends on Staten Island in N.Y. is not bad either.

Both SportsSource stores in the San Fernando Valley are good. Cardboard Legends in Van Nuys is good for pack ripping new stuff. Beverly Hills Baseball Card Shop has LOTs of EXMT late 50's/60's stuff. Great for EXMT raw set builders, and Matt is a good guy. Burbank Sportscards has been discussed endlessly on this forum. They're great in a pinch but overpriced although Rob and Steve are really nice guys. The Dugout in Santa Monica/Venice is terrible. Valley Baseball Card Shop just West of the 405 has some nice guys and are good to chat up while ripping packs. If you live in Los Angeles or near there and you ever open new stuff, do yourself a favor and go to Frank & Son in City of Industry on Saturdays. It's eBay or better prices on new boxes but you're not paying shipping either. Hope that helps.

    Hi all,

I will be taking a road trip later this week and really would like to break it up by stopping at some cards shops.

I will be flying into Buffalo, NY and heading to Perth, ON. It looks like my route will take me through Syracuse and Watertown, NY.

The second part of my trip will be to see my son pitch in Hagerstown, MD. He was drafted last year and is with the Washington Nationals Class A team. My route for this part of the trip will be again starting in Buffalo and heading south through Bradford, Clearfield and Johnstown.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Great idea for a thread!

I haven't been there in years but Dave and Adams Card World near Buffalo is definitely worth a stop.

I am about 25 minutes up I-81 from Hagerstown and there is nothing close to that near here.

I get most of my supplies at a shop in Greencastle, PA (10 minutes from Hagerstown) if you want a short trip.

Scott has the most incredible store I have ever seen anywhere on this planet!

If any of you guys are ever on Long Island , you definitely would not be disappointed stopping inside his huge store , he always gave my family great deals ,

Everything is either PSA or JSA authenicated .

More Cards baseballs, pictures , helmets , jerseys . . . you name it he got it in stock , without question 98 percent of the time .

He just opened up this new store , way larger that his old place that wasn't even that small , but stuff was stacked floor to ceiling and wall to wall . . .

    It;s just insane .

  • << <i>All the card stores in the DFW area went out of business. What a surprise >>

There are still several in DFW. Nicks is the best I have found, a couple of others I used to know of are not to be found though. I do keep my eye out for them when I am there and almost always find a new one there.
  • Not sure if this counts because we do not really have any here in Shreveport, LA but the Greenwood flea market guy named Jerry.

There is really nothing here in Saint Pete that is all that great.

There used to be two stores close to me that were nice. One guy moved and the other dude had a heart attack and died on a golf course. His wife took over the store but it closed after a few months.

A few years ago I stopped at some shop in Bakersfield on my way to Vegas. The owner (older guy - late 50s/early 60s) was a scout for the Padres. Are you familiar with the place?

    Hi everyone,

Mike asked who my son is. Here you go, and yes I am a very proud dad!

Meyers was selected in the 2007 draft by the Washington Nationals in the 5th round. A 6'6" right handed pitcher with four pitches he can throw for strikes.

Meyers was a two-time All-West Coast Conference selection for the Lions. In 2007, the right-hander led the Lions in ERA (3.46), innings pitched (109.1), and strikeouts (85). Perhaps most impressively, Meyers worked at least six innings in each of his 15 starts during the 2007 season.

He entered his junior season on the watch lists for both the Brooks Wallace and Roger Clemens Awards.

Meyers' three-year career ERA of 3.65 ranks in the top-5 all-time at LMU and is the best career mark for a Lion since 1981.

Drafted out of high school in the 14th round of the 2004 draft by the New York Mets after turning down multiple offers in the 2nd round to go to college, Meyers also saw his stock rise after a successful summer in the Cape Cod League where he was an all star. Meyers led his 2005 Orleans Cardinals to the league championship, earning playoff MVP honors in the process.

Not a bad start to his career!!!

    From KKFL.com

Barry Svrluga, of the Washington Post, reports Washington Nationals P Brad Meyers hasn't allowed an earned run in 23 2/3 innings of his pro career, split between the rookie Gulf Coast League and low-Class A Hagerstown.
  • In Nashville, TN, it's Cards R Fun which is not far off the I-65/Harding Road exit. It's a rat's nest with boxes upon boxes of 1975-present cards stored from floor to ceiling along two full walls. It's quite unorganized, but fun to go through. Vintage singles (baseball, late '50s-early '70s) are much more organized and there's usually some decent stuff. The place is small and cramped, you can hardly walk through it, it reeks of smoke and two different radio stations are always blaring simultaneously. But I can spend hours in there! I believe it's the only card shop left standing in town.

  • Does anyone recall a great Southside Chicago card shop from the 1970's that was in the vicinity of 36th and Archer Avenue. The building was old and the store looked old. No frills inside other than old black & whites, trophies, old mitts and bats and hundreds of great cards I had only seen in books before. The owners were a couple of hobby legends (Don Steinbach?). I think that they later moved their store to Lagrange Road (80's). Are they still in business?

I remember going there in 1980. I had always liked the look of the 1969 Mantle and had never owned any Mantle card. I went in with about $20 (15 years old at the time) and asked if they had a 1969 Mantle. The owner went to the back, pulled out a draw (similar to an 800 ct box but without a lid) and proceeded to lay 16 copies of the Mantle across the counter, like a magician doing a card trick. All cards were priced the same - $11. After a few minutes of looking for the sharpest corners, without any concern for centering, I walked out with a treasured piece of cardboard that would, 21 years later, reside in a PSA 8 o/c slab.

    What a great time

Orutulsa, man are you ever right on about Cards R Fun here in Nashville! That place hasn't changed in the 12 years I have been going there! It is a mess, but I can always look and find something I like.

Also, I have posted this before, but Sports Treasures in Knoxville is a great store that has been around since 1988. His ebay ID is ebark23.

    Good thread.

Yes, it's still open. The shop is a little unorganized, but the owner does have a pretty good selection of vintage and modern. I usually try to make it down from northern KY every other month or so to see if they have added anything to their vintage inventory.

You can start your trip off by going to one of the card shops that I highly recommend in Cincinnati - Ideal Baseball Cards. It's only about 5 mi. or so off of I-75, and has a very good selection of vintage. Everything from T206 cards and up. The owner is a real good guy to deal with too. Hope this helps!

Totally agree TNT. Have known Scott for years, but haven't bought from there in awhile. I collect more cards and he concentrates more on the autographed material. He does have lots of cards, but that part of his business unorganized and I don't have time to look through the inventory.

As for his autograph selection, it's the best I've seen EVER in a card store. Unique items from every sport (baseball, football, etc) plus boxing, olympics, soccer, NAscar, as well as movie stars and celebrities. I beleive he also has a website.

Could I put in a shout for a shop somewhere in the Anaheim/Fullerton area in California. It was in a complex that I think was called 'Hobby City' that had different types of collector shops. Was an excellent shop with good display cases with modern and vintage stuff. Can't remember the damn name!

Best shop in my county. Mostly modern stuff with some vintage star cards (most are overpriced though). A ton of older product from the 80s and 90s along with most of the latest releases. You can expect to pay about $10 more for a box here than online (Ginter $98 after tax, 05 Diamond Kings $60) but that's the norm now-a-day's. Really nice guy owns the place too.

Kenmore Collectibles in Boston, MA on Commonwealth Avenue right by Fenway park near Kenmore Square is a GREAT place to go to. A huge selection of all the newest stuff in all sports from two dollar per pack items up to the $250+ range. You name it they have it or know where to get it--new cards, inserts, old cards from the 30's-60's, all of todays bigger name players, memorabilia and a great collection of signed baseballs. I just recently picked up a Ted Williams signed sweet spot ball graded 7.5 by psa/dna for $300. Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Hank Aaron...superb selection. If your into coins/stamps and currency they are starting to open up more stock in that realm including all the supplies you'll ever need. There prices are very fair and they are always open to a fair offer. Go in and see Peter, Mike and the dog Dodger who is always working hard on sleeping in the corner.

    Chance favors the prepared mind.

Gosh, the first card shop I ever went to was in LaGrange, IL on LaGrange Road (downtown LaGrange) around 1984 or 85. That shopped closed around '90 or so. Going in there as a 12-yr old was pretty magical. They had complete sets, all kinds of memorabilia, and behind the counter they had hundreds of drawers of cards ready to fill your want list. They're no longer there unfortunately.
