I think there's been an unannounced hoard recently, with several specimens of tough posthumous Cnut (jewel cross type) and Harthacnut pieces. I already have a nice Harthacnut (probably from the same unannounced hoard, but a jewel cross type, in Near EF), I figure I'll pick up this Harthacnut piece (different type) before the market absorbs them all and their prices go up again. They've been selling for £6000 and up from GVF, so I think this is a fine buy if I ever get buyer's remorse.
Yeah, I know this reverse is off-center, but it doesn't obliterate any of the legend and the portrait is perfect.
ANGLO-SAXON, Kings of All England. Harthacnut. 1035-1042. AR Penny (17mm, 1.12 g, 6h). Arm and Scepter type, in the name of Cnut (BMC xvii, Hild. I). Theodford (Thetford) mint; Eadric, moneyer. Struck 1040-1042. Diademed bust left, holding trefoil-tipped scepter / + EDRIC ON ÐEOTVOR, quadrilateral, with pellet in center and angles, over voided short cross. SCBI 15 (Copenhagen), 3816-7 (same dies); North 799; SCBC 1169. Choice EF. A superb portrait piece. Rare.

(Harthacnut pennies abound from the Lund mint, which are Danish and much lower is value and rather common.)
I think the value discrepancy is due to this issue being in the name of Cnut (Harthacnut's father), even though the rarity of this piece is comparable to the same type (Arm and Scepter) using the monarch's full name.

Yes, I am! But, I heard from the dealer today telling me something (that I can't really divulge here) that made me feel very good about getting this coin.
So, all told, while 15 March 2016 may have been a "bad" day for me, it may turn out to be a great day after all. At least better for me than it was for Julius Caesar.

The arm-and-scepter issues are quite generally accepted to be coins of Harthacnut, despite being issued in the name of Cnut.
This coin, along with the jewel cross coin in the name of Cnut, are posthumous issues and the latter thought to have been struck by Queen Emma, the second wife of the late Cnut, to promote the claim of her son Harthacnut. The throne of England instead passed to Harold Harefoot, Cnut's son by his first wife Aelfgifu.
After Cnut's death there was a big power vacuum, since he had built an empire and his sons were relatively young. Harthacnut's mother Emma, and Cnut's first wife Aelfgifu (who was very much alive) both tried to promote the interests of their sons. Harthacnut became king in Denmark and Harold in England. While this situation did not please the queens, it does not seem as there was any great animosity between the half-brothers and no wars were fought. Within 7 years both Harold and Harthacnut would be dead, and the Viking rule in England would be over.
There is interesting but dry reading on the attribution of these coins, which I am happy to say was done by someone with far more patience than I could have.
It's odd to imagine a simultaneous issue of coins bearing the names of Cnut, Harold, and Harthacnut (if it confuses us, imagine how the contemporary people felt) although the evidence seems to suggest this was at least partly the case.

I think I'm the only person who noticed the initial link was not right. Obviously, the well-heeled collectors of this stuff (who drive up the prices on folks like me!) don't come around here much if at all.
