1893 Morgan Dollar Purchase

Went through an accumulation of coins for a friend. He had @ 32 silver dollars among many other items. To my surprise, one of them was an 1893 Morgan. Had it graded across the street and it came back as a 61. He doesn't care about the coin, just the money. I want it for my Morgan dollar date set. I have a good idea of what I'll offer him for the coin. Just curious. What would you offer to pay for it if it was your decision?

    Without images, that's a very difficult question to answer. An MS-61 is generally not a very nice coin. Many collectors will take a nice AU-58 over an MS-60-62 coin generally because of the greater eye appeal with the AU-58.



    MS-60 bid is $700 and MS-63 bid is $1100. I imagine a sight seen offer for an NGC-61 would be south of $600 as the retail price is likely in the $775 neighborhood.

    Underrated date. I would be an $800 buyer on this coin if it were offered to me.

    $500 to $600 is fair and you know you can always sell it for $800.

    Thank you for the answers. When I get the coin back I'll put up it's cert # for viewing. Breen stated that this date is usually notably bag marked and this one certainly is. I personally don't think it's that it's PQ at all. I don't see it getting a CAC sticker.

    PCGS auction prices realized shows a range of $823-$881 for the coins sold in 2015. A $700 offer sounds reasonable assuming the coin is a typical 61.

    There's a strong price from a respected dealer. Looks like my estimate was a little low and the market was stronger than I thought.
