    How many have been cracked out and regraded? Or sent to another service? The number isn't the amount of unique coins, it's the number of grades that have ever been assigned to that date and mm. I wonder what the real number of coins is....??? I wonder if there is any way to even make an educated guess....

    Yes, it is a MS64 that I have owned since Oct 2009 and paid $60 for it.

    Don't know how educated it is, and certainly there has been a fair number of crack-outs regraded, but IMO going with 70% unique seems plausible. That would make 172,278 (give or a take a few dozen) unique 1881-S Morgans graded by PCGS. image

    That 1881-S must have been a part of the Continental-Illinois hoard. I remember that a lot of cameo DMPL's were in that group. Great looking dollar!

    That's funny. I had that Morgan graded and truviewed probably 8 years ago. Can I ask where this coin resides now? I had it graded with several others that had similar toning from scotch tape and velvet.

    Are you talking about the coin I posted?



    I bought in in 2009 and I still have it but it isn't registered in any of my sets.



    It might have come from a Great Collections or TeleTrade auction.



    I don't renenber exactly how I came to buy it?

    Yes, the coin in the Original Post. I bought it raw at an antique mall about 8 years ago in Angola Indiana. The owner of the place said that coin and several others were taped to a velvet board for many years. That how they toned like they did. I had 4 or 5 that looked similar. But I know I originally had that beauty graded. I think I sold on eBay or to a forum member later that year. Funny how goes change hands.

    I'd consider 50% of the Morgans having been regraded. If you take just the PCGS or NGC pops on their own, that's probably a reasonable reflection of what remains in slabs.
