NEWP: Mining Taler

Started a new thread not to interfere with the other NEWP comments. I bought one lot on CNG today, somewhat off scope yet the design and coin in hand was quite appealing.

GERMANY, Braunschweig-Calenberg-Hannover (Kurfürstentum und Herzogtum). Georg II. As King of Great Britain, 1727-1760. AR Taler (41mm, 29.45 g, 6h). Weisser Schawn (White Swan) Mine. Zellerfeld mint. Dually dated Luciae (Autumn) 1732 and 1756 IBH. Crowned coat-of-arms / Swan swimming left on lake; Wiesser Schawn (White Swan) mine in background. Smith 131; Welter 2568; Davenport 2097; KM 291. EF, toned.

Here is mine, Dav-2157, by way of comparison. (Mine is not a newp.)

As an aside, why do some dealers like to present images of the coins with the reverse side on the left? And, in this case, which is the reverse? I always assumed that the wildmen side was the reverse, so that makes the mine scene the obverse. And, I always assumed the crown, shield and heraldry was also on the reverse (usually).

I believe yours is actually the one backwards. The obverse is usually the side stating the name of the ruler/duke/prince etc. in my experience. I don't think there is any hard and fast rule, nor do I think it really matters all that much. Some say the side with a date should be the obverse.

EDIT: The Krause Guide also says the obverse is the shield, and the reverse is the swan for Zohar's piece (D-2097).

It also says that the swan is the reverse for your Thaler (D-2157).

Hey Z - like I already posted last nite this piece is adorable period...I love it a lot, it has character and uber sweet eye appeal.

Notice also its very well struck almost evenly on both sides.

Nice coin that Zohar won. I like his a lot too. His coin would fit nicely to both my GB and German States sets. Maybe I'll get to see it in hand at the show.

BRG: perhaps you're right on both that the mine scene is the reverse *and* it doesn't really matter. AFAICT, the mine scene side for both of our coins came from the same die. The other side differs from Karl to Georg. My image is actually from a German dealer (Pater). My coin is slabbed. I wonder how PCGS slabbed it...

Not sure why I'm stuck on this obv/rev orientation issue, but I don't mean to hijack this thread. It's about Z's coin, which is very nice.

Z - I think that one will grade out very nicely. Guessing MS-62.

EVP - I recall that one from earlier posts. The detail on the wildman is extraordinary, but crazy how the strike is so soft on the right side.
