cherry picks or got picked
We all enjoy to cherry pick rare varieties. Have you ever got picked because you trusted TPG labels or phone book auction opinions? Here is an example. This coin was described as an R6 (BG-203) coin but based on photos, it is a BG-224, an R3 coin.
In case, you won this lot and find out a few years later that the slab label isn't correct. What should you do? Return the coin to the phone book auction company and ask for refund but it has been a few years. Send it in to TPG and ask them to pay for the difference? May be you will get a letter to state that this is a mechanical error.
What's your take here?

I believe that the TPG is financially responsible for the misattributions...especially since they were paid to make the attribution correctly.
I agree with you but I doubt they will do this. If this is an outlier then yes, I expect they will pay the difference and make it right; nevertheless, when there are many of mis-attributed calfracs coins, I always wonder what TPG would do.
Go to ebay and you can see a few that are actively listing now.
I have always been surprised when 'big' auction companies run obvious mechanical errors through their auctions - like the wrong date, mint, denomination...
Do you think phone book auction company has resource to verify every variety marked on the slab label? If so, no more cherry picking from them
Also, this is not an obvious mechanical error to the phone book auction company. This coin should not have that label from the beginning. Also, BG-203 and BG-224 are very different. On reverse side, the ribbons are different. The 203 also has two little wings next to ribbon (224 did not have any). I don't believe this could be a mechanical error from TPG.
