Have never seen the 1878 Flowing Hair counterfeit half. Have handled one of the 1787's from the same maker who couldn't get his date punches right.

Contemporary counterfeits are cool and collectable.

It's the modern Chinese knockoffs that are troublesome.

If you have a copy of Don Taxay's "Counterfeit, Mis-Struck and Unofficial U.S. Coins" you can see the 1787 Flowing Hair Half from the same maker as the 1878 FLowing Hair Half in this sale.

Pretty much anything that was made to fool a collector is trash.

Pretty much anything that was cast from a real coin and meant to pass as money is also trash.

But the fakes that were struck from hand cut dies and meant to circulate as money (confusingly referred to as "contemporary counterfeits") can be really interesting, and sometimes surprisingly valuable.

FWIW, I'm an avid collector of contemporary counterfeit coins of the Central American Republic. They're not only an important piece of the historical record, but they're tons of fun.

The Lebanese counterfeits are troublesome as well.

    I Disagree.

There are many transfer-die pieces (which circulated alongside genuine coins) that are worth significant premiums.

    Such as:

    1944 "Henning" nickels.

    1923-D & 1930-D "Soviet" dimes.

Micro-o (and "family") privately-made VAM Morgan Dollars.
