1938 proof nickel obverse variety's...BIG NEWS IF YOU ASK ME

so i see they updated the 1938 proof nickel to include

the re-engraved obverse variety's

this is jaw dropping looking at the prices they put...these prices can't be real can they?

image

we've discussed these re-engraved obverse's here before and it was thought

the 1938 proof had about an even mix of r.e.d versus non r.e.d. and no real value

did the new cherry picker's guide change this?

my question is

does anyone have an image of the FS-402 & FS-403

which one is this PR67 i just made...the FS-402 or the FS-403 ?

I don't have an answer to your question. But It seems odd that they priced the 1938 R.E.D.'s but not the other new R.E.D.'s (1952, 53, 54).

surely they're to follow and should be higher in value...yes?

i just can't believe they priced these at what they did

In the boxed pictures, the lighter one on the left appears to be FS-402 and the toned one on the right FS-401. Note the added serif on the S on the toned one.

Those prices make no sense to me. In the CPG the FS-401, 402 and 403 only have a $50 premium in PF-67. I helped publicize these varieties and I don't think they are worth killer prices.

FWIW, when I was writing the article I had trouble finding a "normal" coin to photograph.

the one on the left is a normal die...no serif's and reg hair-tie...yes?

the one on the right is a R.E.D. as it has the added serif's and noticeable change to hair-tie

    and yes

those prices seem far fetched to me but i'm still on cup of coffee #1

your orange one is fs-401 - which I had to confirm by blowing up on coinfacts

I think your left is normal

the 402 has strong reengraved ribbon looking like V pointed to 8 in date not sure about lower S of trust but suspect not

the 403 has light reengraved IN GOD and LIB and top part of ribbon - no lower S

book says at least 2 others not mentioned -

will need good eyes or magnification on these.

Strange indeed. I have been searching the 52, 53 and 54's and I can assure you they are very scarce compared to the 38's which are common in my opinion. The 53 and 54 RED's are particularly tough!

I've looked a quite a few 38 proofs and I never managed to find one that did NOT have hand cut serifs and/or re-engraving.

    Maybe that's the rarity image

And where can I find pictures of these proof varieties to check my coins with. Thanks
