Attempted Theft...1956 Mantle psa 9...on ebay...

So Im easing into a beautiful Sunday here...pups are fed and watered, family is out for a few, friends are starting the football smack talk.......lets look up some mantles...wow, thats a nice '56...dont see those too often...still low bids relatively.....hmm thats a familiar serial number....???

True, he has the picture. And its a nice one. Front and back...But i seem to have the card in hand. He states he bought it for investment purposes and its one of the nicest that he has ever brokered. Don't recall selling it to someone who is accused of fraud selling a Harley Davidson.

It's early and i may be wrong, and maybe I've sold it to him. But i don't think so. I only sell Mantles to one person image

Anyways...here we go again....I hope no one here is bidding on it....I bet KC, belz, begsu, ccountry, stone193 et al. have already seen it...Didnt I post my pic of the 9 here? for comparison. (its why i hesitate to post pics)

DO NOT BID!!!! I have the card right next to me. Or maybe bid and have him send the card first. image

...ps..can anyone post a link for the rest of the CU members?

It's not theft. It's fraud. You have the card right next to you. Semantics. Meh.

Contact eBay. Prove to them that someone is "fraudulently" attempting to sell a picture of your possession. Give them a few moments to collectively scratch their heads. Wait for the auction to close. Enjoy fireworks.

Isn't this the card that PWCC sold a month or so ago?

Edit: I just checked past listings. The seller even copied the PWCC description.

Stewie...i was going to say "attempted theft" but for the sake of space and time to get the warning out there ASAP, I dont think many would mind....i apologize

lets say "Blatant Theft" of the image of my card, of the authentication number which now belongs to me, I think qualifies?..somewhat?

looks like the top three bidders are,,,hmm, have some retracting history..

    jfkheat...thanks for the link

No worries. I just don't want the forum to assume something was actually stolen from you. Then the police, helicopters, trained dogs, etc.....

You don't want that, do you? ;-)

    Mantle Auction

That is the card and the person trying to sell it lifted the wording from that listing as well.

Well, all kidding aside, I doubt anyone here with the least bit of interest could be fooled by that. I'm confident that our most proficient collectors wouldn't do much but laugh at that nonsense.

"Hello, eBay? Yeah, just letting you know that some cheater on your site is trying to steal money by using copies of a scan used by your Superstar seller last month."

He may have lifted the image from here, or is reading this post so removed it. Who knows. I did ask him what he was looking for.... It only had 3 days left. So was already up for 4 days minimum? Got up to 17,000 and was taking best offers. So plenty of time for someone not as knowledgeable as CU to get scammed....Guys like that are sure to be back for easy money. As we discussed its a win-break even proposition for these guys. Nothing to lose vs the enforcement policies. Just go away and try again, making a few thousand each time for cutting and pasting. How many have gotten thru that we don't know of? Last time you guys saved begsu then months later this one tried.

You see plenty of great deals for great cards only listed/lasting a couple days then, poof, gone. I doubt they took it down because they saw the light. People are getting scammed. Ive been.

This guy even had a negative feedback for scamming someone on an $8000 Harley. But then listed a five figure card with no problem.

Its why a lot of people stay away from this hobby. Sad.

When I click on the link, I don't even get "It's been closed, or taken down". Just "similar items". Is there a way to retrieve the listing? Id like to bookmark the seller.

Good think we have this community. I can't believe how these people are. Just outright criminals. Criminals!

Geez. Donato, you've uncovered another one. That's not today's cheater. Appears to be an epidemic developing around this particular card.

    IMPORTANT....

Donato...thanks.. and Stewie is correct that its someone else..sort of

...looks like the original guy is attempting to cover his tracks...the 2nd listing is almost the exact same (home city, description, exact text, wording, exact reasoning "investment purposes, forced to sell ...etc) except his ebay name...and both in philadelphia...the 2nd was just listed than immediately taken down....i think to cover the 1st's tracks.....the 1st listing i can't find..BUT i still have the info from the reply/response i used to ask him. Except it won't let me pull up the original listing for some reason. ..but i did send a copy to myself which still has his name...for those who want to avoid him....its "mhall1485"..all just IMHO

WOW...he's at home working hard to cover his tracks, almost did it completely by knowing the system. Clever. Donato, stewy, maddux, jfk..more clever..great going guys!

It probably won't do much good. Scammers hijack dormant ebay accounts. When the auctions get shut down, they probably move on to another dormant account.

huh? i think the name of my thread was actually "odds that this mantle 9 shows?". was perfectly executed and had a refund w/i 10 days but i had to go for it at that price...as we all have seen 75 brett 9s are possible for $500.

i did see this card listed and had it in my watch list but usually don't research a card much til 24 hours or so before it's set to end...too much can happen to really warrant wasting too much time or get heartbroken, ie sellers remorse, early ending offers, fake listings, etc.

remember we did just have another ebay outage a few weeks ago. more accounts were hacked, mainly dormant ones which are specifically targeted.

thanks sdub! not sure how she flew under the radar. wasn't necessarily a steal, but I waited til the last minute and ended up being the only bidder and won it at the starting bid.

the scan that was used had what appeared to be white specks, but if ya looked closely you could tell it wasn't on the card itself. maybe that drove a few people away?

but was super surprised that another bid didn't come sniping in last minute as i wasn't really expecting to win it, but if i could grab it at that i certainly would and any other 8's at that price.

was it the one for 12,500? i think he's going to keep trying to slip it by and make a quick sell before someone catches on. i hope for that amount a person will do a lot of due diligence.....i know it went for a crazy amount in the AH but 12,5 is way crazy (maybe the first amount isn't so crazy anymore,,ugh)

belz...just read your PM...so was this one with the spot or the psa 9 of mine that they lifted the pic of?....gee whiz people

It was a picture of your PSA 9 card and the person was auctioning it off..I emailed you my eBay exchange with her as it said she would "take the auction down reserve the right" blah blah.

The eBay handles that are compromised have nothing to do with sports cards. The seller history or other items for sale usually include women's clothing or random items. I don't view this as an issue unless these unscrupulous individuals were able to hijack an account of a big sports card seller to better camouflage their identity. I don't think most people would buy a big dollar card from someone with zero history and red flags abound.

Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.

Ripping people off for 12 large will definitely catch up with the crook. Unless they're located in Lithuania or some other far away foreign land, the law will catch up with them for that amount. There are too many traces to the electronic payment for them to be able to hide from it. If the crook is reading these forums, they should take my advice and figure out a way to earn an honest buck. The only time I got ripped off on eBay for a decent amount of money, the postal inspector did track them down, did prosecute them and they ended up having to pay restitution to everyone they ripped off and had to spend several months under house arrest.

Appears to be same scans from 2010 PWCC auction...

I love the "sellers" feedback. No activity for over a year selling .99 cent and 2 dollar trinket girls jewelry and a Sabrina VHS tape to a 5 figure baseball card. And some say you can't make it in America.

    Description from auction:

"Perhaps the single finest '56 Mantle in a PSA 9 holder! Simply outstanding from every angle; this card actually exceeds the expectations of a PSA 9. Dead centered with four GEM MINT corners and flawless surfaces. It's impossible to think such a card could exist 55 years after it's production. Pristine as the day it was printed, this card does not disappoint."

Sounds like it could be lifted from the PWCC Auction from 2010, given the 55 year reference. Seller seems to be claiming he won the card in that auction, so who knows?

Based on the only FB the seller has received as a seller, who in their right mind would bid any amount on this card?? Unbelievable..

It's the same scan and auction description from a different seller. I guess that removes any microscopic chance there was of it being legitimate.
