I just could not resist. It has been a while since I have seen a War Nickel that looked this nice. I just wish that the reverse had been a little better. Guess the grade if you wish. Will post the grade tomorrow evening.

Thanks everyone for the comments and opinions. I'm sure that some will be surprised by the grade that was given. I would say that it got a one to two point bump for the color. It is weakly struck , however the area of E PLURIBUS UNUM looks to me like a struck thru error. Large detailed pics usually show all of the small imperfections and distractions. In hand with the naked eye or even a 5x loupe it looks rather good and those imperfections are not really that big of a deal. Most of all I just wanted to share it for others to see and enjoy.

Cool, congrats. Here is a 1944-D that I was watching at Heritage. It had some pretty cool toning as well.

grade does not matter on that coin.

The spot above the ear appears to be corrosion. It's a decent 65 without the problem spot. Maybe, because of the toning the graders will stretch to 66 if the damage above the ear is overlooked. I wouldn't. I say no grade due to environmental damage.

O.k., you win. It's a 67+ stunner, that has all the features of a common 65. As in multiple distracting marks on both jaw and cheekbone, three or more deep marks in the hair, many marks on the collar, and a weak strike for a war nickel. On second thought toning is everything. It's a 68 gem. Just don't ever turn it over.

Hydrant it seems at a smaller more actual size all those minor distracting marks just go away. This is why I stated in another thread that people are now buying the image and not the coin.

Thank you everyone for the comments. The images were provided to highlight the colors, and are pretty accurate to what they look like in hand. Large pictures do however show imperfections that are not so obvious when inspecting with a loupe.

Luster is above average. It just does not show very well in the pics since I was going for showing off the color.

Type2, are you basing your grade mainly on the strike? If your seeing something else please tell what it is. The lowest I would go is 64 and if there is no question about the toning then I could see a point added to get to 65, tops. The surface conditions on the reverse would be o.k. on a Capped Bust Half, but on a Jefferson nickel they're a killer. Ms62 just seems a bit low. What are your thoughts?

No not basing. It's not graded only on color as well but this coin has a weak strike that comes with a nicer strike in this type being silver not nickel. So you need to graded it as such if you look at all of it. I love the toning just not the strike as for luster it may be there but I'm back to the strike it's not there look at E PLURIBUS UNUM it's weak the dome is flat the Pillars flat, the door flat his hair flat so MS62 maybe a 3 for color bump. But that's just me PCGS has the last say but if I was buying I will not pay 64/5 money that is just me. I would pass that is just me any one can pay or do what ever they want it's there money. But I'm out not me. So what is the grade? I just want to see how wrong I am. PS the black mark looks like a counting wheel mark Don't kill me but I almost said AU58.

I think it's important to base a grade estimate(especially from a picture) on the overall quality of the coin with an understanding of what a typical strike should be. For "S" Mint Silver Jefferson Nickels that means that the step detail and overall strike is usually weaker than the other Mints. This coin exhibits weaker than usual detail, though.

What looks like obverse die polish may mean that there was clashing and the dies were re-worked which removed some reverse detail, but that doesn't account for the other things that are quite distracting on the reverse.

There's an old school saying that "the reverse might not raise the grade but it can lower it" which applies here. If some of what the picture shows isn't rub then I see an MS64 obverse and an MS61 reverse.

I too am baffled. it is a nice looking coin, especially the obverse, but I would never have expected that grade. I await the reaction of others but my initial impression is that the coin should never be taken out of that capsule, ever.

Now for a bit of a rant. This is the classic problem with market grading. The coin got the generous bump into a 67 holder because the obverse is in fact stunning. But now that it rests in its 67 plastic the vast majority of dealers (all?) will start their pricing there, and then bump it up because of the toning. I get it, but the fact is that toning premium has already been factored into the 67 grade. I have called this the toning double bump for many years. And why I am not a fan of market grading. I run into this all the time in assembling my commem set. End rant.

not as bad as some suggest?? you must be kidding me!!! Jefferson Nickel collectors refer to that affectionately as a Wheel Chair Ramp.

strike has to count for something, it can't just be ignored, and the reverse strike on this coin is extremely weak. I feel the same as JJS on this --- for years we have seen MS 64 coins get a 1-2 point market-grade bump for tone only to be priced another 1-2 points ahead by sellers.

it has buried more than a few coins in their holders and owners in those coins.

The old adage is" buy the coin and not the holder". I bought it specifically for the color and nothing more. I already have a nice 44-S that is 66FS. I am not saying that our hosts were wrong on grading this one, but like most of you, I think that it is a weaker than normal strike.
