Coin Shows, Stores and Clubs in Connecticut?

ShadyDaveShadyDave Posts: 2,217 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm looking to expand my horizons and venture to some new stores, coin shows or even attend a coin club to meet some new people and find some new coins for my collection! If anyone has any recommendations or ideas, I'd be happy to hear them. I live in Hartford county, but I don't really have an issue driving if I can hit a few LCS's in a few hours. I normally buy coins in the $1-$500 range 99% of the time.

I normally buy online, however I do occasionally go to:

Vernon Coin (Vernon, CT)
CT Valley Coin (Manchester, CT)
Gold and Coin Exchange (Springfield, MA)
Mansfield CT Annual Coin Show (Mansfield, CT)
Various pawn shops...

I see one additional thread from ~10 years ago mentioning some other LCS's...does anyone have any experience with any of these? I like morgans, mercury dimes and collect a bunch of "darkside" stuff as well.

Vasbro coins in Norwich

Guilford Coin Exchange in Guilford

Valley Coins in Seymour

A.J. Coins in West Haven

Sam Sloat Coins in Westport

I have friends that live in Manchester and have visited several of the stores you mentioned on both of your lists. The only problem I have with Vernon Coin is that the dealer smokes like a chimney in his store and I can't spend more than a few minutes before I get a headache. My sister-in-law likes Sam Sloat. The store also sells baseball cards (only about 1/3 of the floor space) and I have seen the kids come in for cards and get drawn over to the coins. The few times I have been in the store, the staff is nice and answers any questions we have ever had. They have a lot of stuff in the back and we have never had a problem searching through their inventory. Their prices are pretty reasonable (I've seen worse at coin shows).

Yeah, Rodger (who owns Vernon Coin) smokes a lot, but he is a good resource and I've built a pretty good rapport with him, so I get good prices on items when he has something I like. He has a good network too, so if I mention I'm looking for something in particular, he can usually track a nice example down for me.

Sam Sloat seems to get mentioned a lot, so looks like I'll be heading to Westport, might try to hit up a few other LCS's on the way down.

These are my old stomping grounds. Some of those dealers are better than the others. I was up in Norwich a few months ago and Vasbro was no longer at that location. I just assumed that the market dried up as the gold market tanked for 4 years. Feel free to PM me on those dealers.

If you want to learn as much as possible (and quickly) I'd recommend developing a relationship with Connecticut Numismatic Investments out of New Britain (no store). They set up at the Auburn, MA show each month and usually walk the floor of the Hartford show in the morning. If you're involved as you indicate, you probably can't find a more seasoned and sharper dealer in the state of Connecticut.
