"How to Get a New Die Variety in the Red Book"

In the Summer 2015 issue of the Journal of the Barber Coin Collectors’ Society,
member Bob Duzan shared his firsthand observations of some interesting Barber dime
varieties ("A Variety Challenge," volume 26, no. 2). In his article he asked, "What
should be the criteria for listing a coin variety in the 'Red Book' or other coin publications?"

I wrote an illustrated follow-up article, "How to Get a New Barber Die Variety Into
the Red Book," which will by published in the next issue of the BCCS Journal.
This is an analysis of the coverage of Barber dime, quarter, and half dollar (and Liberty
Head nickel) varieties in both the Red Book and "Mega Red," along with behind-the-scenes
advice on getting your favorite varieties listed.

If you're interested in die varieties but you don't get the BCCS Journal, you can
sign up for membership in the Barber Coin Collectors' Society to receive this issue.
Membership is a bargain at $15 per year, and it includes a subscription to the magazine.

Every year around the holidays a delivery truck rumbles up to the
loading dock of Whitman Publishing headquarters in Atlanta and
drops off a five-pound block of milk chocolate, courtesy of Bill Fivaz.

Carved into its delicious surface is a list of die varieties to be included
in the next year's Red Book.

Wait --- no! Delete that last sentence. Not true at all.

LOL - If you see a 5-pound block of chocolate delivered to your dock in the form of the 1919 DDO Mercury Dime, it ISN'T from me 8-)

It's embarrassing how quickly it gets devoured. The darn thing
is reduced to crumbs and shavings by close-of-business.

For those who are humor-impaired, I should probably point out that
attempted bribery actually doesn't get things into, or removed from,
    the Red Book.

Actually, he worked for Nestle. One year he brought a ten-pound Nestle Crunch bar to the ANA SUmmer Seminar and it was attacked with vigor. I just tease him by saying Hershey.

At least he did not work for Harvey.

"Ernie Capadino: ...You ever heard of Walter Harvey, makes Harvey bars — you know, the candy?
Dottie Hinson: Yeah. We feed them to the cows when they're constipated."

  • I suppose you would need to have your new variety verified well prior to the next publication and then suck up to the publishers image
