Grade My NewP, an 1814/3 Bust Half Dollar

I was lucky enough to snag this coin in an eBay BIN listing for a very fair price. I've bought a few examples of this overdate in the last few years but never hung onto any of them. I plan on keeping this coin.

I'm torn between two grades. Let me know what you think!

I really like the coin and I know there will be guesses all over the place. I see it as a weak strike from worn dies. There seems to be quite a bit of luster in the protected ares and I could see it grading as high as 45.

Looks like she should straight grade. 25 or 30

i was ok at genuine vf details but somethings fishy about the softness of the obverse
could this be some type of counterfeit?
her hair really throws me off looking at it...somethings just fishy about this one's looks

to me anyways
not my series so i'm no pro here

hopefully i'm out in left field on it and mean no offence
just being candid with ya

if the real deal here...some type of cleaning will hold it back from straight grading
then my vf details 1st thought would fit

Now Brian I know you are one of the tops when I have questions on these so bare/bear with me please.

I was looking at the reverse and see what looks to be 4 or more die clashes. This being said it also almost looks like this coin was struck over another coin, could that be possible. I put this up on the 65in HD scree just to look at that reverse.

Tough call for me between VF35 and XF40. Because of the strong detail on the obverse and nice shield on the reverse I'll go with XF40.

If it were mine I'd expect a 35. PCGS will probably call it a 30.

I was thinking 20-25, and voted VF20.

Wasn't surprised to find myself below the curve. Was probably too conservative. Nice coin!

I like it and grade it XF40.

Classic strike for the variety/DS. Luster looks to support an XF40 grade as does the right facing wing, left wing as you know is strike.

If the coin hasn't been cleaned, I would say it is a keeper in my book!

i am in the 40 camp. Looks as if there is a decent amount of luster. Do not think the details would get it any higher than that though...

As long as there no hairlines, looks like a pretty coin.

Could have been one of my local B&M shops. They pick the worst struck area of the coin and grade by that. Works well for them when buying.

I voted VF25 and then went to http://www.pcgs.com/photograde/#/Capped50/Grades, where it looks like a VF25 (glad my assessment agreed with PCGS). Factors that could give it a higher grade is if there is some strike weakness for the variety, such as likely exhibited in the Eagles right wing.

I'm in the VF35 crowd myself. But I must say, that hair clashing in the shield is really cool!

I like it as a VF25 (my vote) and could go 30 on a given day. The technical grade is closer to 35 but it will be netted down if holdered problem-free.
