What does it take for a sale get their own pedigreed holders?

ZoinsZoins Posts: 34,401 ✭✭✭✭✭
The large sales tend to have a lot of marketing and new, matching, pedigreed holders.

At the same time, there are sales of large collections over multiple auctions that don't have new, matching, pedigreed holders.

What does it take to get the holders?

I believe that I read somewhere that it would take nearly 100% completion of a pcgs registry set, submitting the set in its entirety to have reholdered and paying an additional fee to be "personalized" with your pedegree.

    In other words...money.

Historically significant collections aside, PCGS will allow Registry Set participants to pedigree their sets if they are 100% complete and rank in the top 5 sets.

I had my Gold Registry Set pedigreed back in 2002 when the Registry just started. It was easier back then to build a top 5 set.

No one, other than myself and family, would care they have my name on the label.
In fact, that probably makes them worth less.

I lost interest in the Registry years ago and I think my set is out of the top 10 by now, but the coins are still pedigreed with my name.

If the reason you would be willing to "pay-up" to get a coin in a holder with a pedigree, ask yourself if you REALLY think the eventual buyer of your coin would REALLY "pay-up" too?

The one time I qualified for a pedigree label for my set (yeah- don't laugh) was ten or twelve years ago when I (briefly) had a top-ten-ranked (#9) and complete gold type set on the Registry (just the smallest, simplest 20th century gold type set). So 100% complete Registry sets with top rankings qualify sometimes, though I don't know the particulars.

In the end, I never sent my set in for the free pedigree reholdering, though it would have been nice to see "Lord Marcovan" or "Shinnick" on a PCGS label. I sold the set a short time later and it dipped in the rankings. (I came aboard when the Registry was still fairly young, so there was less competition. I wouldn't have a prayer to be Top Ten in most of the sets nowadays.)

My understanding is to qualify a set for Pedigree status the set need to be 100% complete and in the all-time top 5 sets. Everyman sets do not qualify.
    I love them Barber Halves.....
