It was early training for early 1970 proof sets.
    They just didn't care.

Nice! Who doesn't love this sort of stuff?
    Lance.
  • If it wasn't for these mistakes I wouldn't have 1400 seated dime variety's to find, only 1375 more to go. image

Umm, the same reason we have WalMart, economy cars, and not every picture is a Mona Lisa

These were just coins, being made by the bucket load, where cost was important. If many of the coins had the value of the metal content near the "value" of the coin, it was a money losing proposition to make them.

    Conversation:

    (1876)

Machinist: Boss, I found a tiny defect on this die that can only be seen under 10x magnification, and has no material impact on the coin. I decided to scrap a die worth 3 days of my paycheck instead of spending 2 minutes to repunch the die.

Boss (striking machinist with cane): You idiot, you are fired. (continues to beat machinist with cane). There is no labor laws, so I can beat you, now get out.

    Conversation (1844, New Orleans Mint):

Mint Employee: "Boss, where'd y'all leave the whiskey?"

Boss: "Right over there next to the Opium!"

Mint Employee: "Oops, I just made a half dollar die with most of the date buried in the rock"

Boss: "Eh, just stamp another date right over it, and take 3 whiskey shots as punishment. Now where's the beer pong table?"

Disclaimer: the above conversation may have been slightly embellished for entertainment purposes. The existence of beer pong in 1844 is disputed. image
