That's a nice medal. I love the sharpness of the engraving. That store card says Merriam made gold medals. Are many gold medals from Merriam known?
<< <i>Nice 1916 Lincoln.

Credit to Mark Goodman for the photo work, he is one of the very best imo. One last Lincoln to finish off the weekend.

Thanks. As you know, Merriam is known for his expert craftsmanship. This one was struck to commemorate the colossal bare knuckle fight between Thomas Sayers of England and John Heenan of America, in a time where it was still illegal.
As for a Merriam medal struck in gold? I know of no such example. As BillJones has often pointed out, Merriam's output (while relatively extensive) was surprisingly small in terms of pieces struck per die. Finding one of his medals in Silver can be a daunting task, and a gold piece would be something very special.
I know of no Merriam piece surviving in gold, but maybe one day one will surface.
