Jefferson Nickel Dealer Recommendations

bigmarty58bigmarty58 Posts: 2,002 ✭✭✭✭✭
My daughter and I are thinking of starting a war nickel set with 65 - 67 grades. Any recommendations on Jefferson Nickel dealers would be appreciated.

Thanks

    Bob,

In my humble opinion, there are no real Jefferson Nickel dealers out there. Yes, there are those who tend to specialize in the series as collectors and some who sometimes sell their finds while the rest of us just hoard what we own. Probably the easiest way to make a set is just buy them off of the Bay of E, Heritage, Great Collections, David Lawrence or these boards, among others. Most of the mid-level grades are available. The show stoppers are the top pops. It just depends on what you want to spend.

    Good luck and happy hunting!

I've got a TON of PCGS War Nickels in stock. I just bought a couple of large collections and they both had lots. I can shoot you some prices on Monday if you like.

Are you out for the adventure, seeking enjoyment with the hunt? Because.........accomplishing such an endeavor could end in minutes if you take the auction or "buy it now" routes. There are only 11 coins. With the major varieties, 14, others, more. Attending coins shows, the local small, less than, lets say 25 to 75 tables. From my experiences, driving more than 50 miles with the notion there are dealers hauling 100's of pristine nickels to a show......well, that just doesn't happen. The more expensive coins have perfect full steps or have exceptional colors/toning. You can collect both with little money but you must be able to spot coins that just miss a perfection in it's quality. You must also set some goals. You will make some mistakes especially when the 2nd, 3rd or 4th coin you buy will make the 1st and 2nd coin look not so good, a coin that you once thought was really nice but is giving you second thoughts. And the 5th, 6th coin will do the same over your other former choices. The only way to avoid this mistake is to shop and learn and wait/have patience. It's always adventurous to watch a coin sell and for how much based on your understanding about how it graded and how you graded it. Wow, that coin sold for a lot but why? Or maybe not so. Don't buy a coin until you can say, I've seen this quality of coin sell before and how much. That's when you know the coin is special, something you really want because the price and grade match what you're expecting in a collector coin for your set.

For what it's worth, this is a series where the cream has not all risen to the top. Learn to grade them astutely and you can still find gem and better coins out there raw, cheap, and beautiful. One thing I like to do is visit B&M dealers and inquire whether they have bought any unc sets with collections recently. Sometimes they are willing to break them up and sell the best coins, and sometimes they want to blow out the whole thing. I've bought entire 1938-date sets of Jeffersons just for the best few coins & sold the rest a bunch of times. You can build a really pretty set without breaking the bank. The war nickels are a great project in their own right. That's where I started with them.

I don't think it has been said in these terms, but spend some quality time with your daughter attending small coins shows and visiting your local shops. Look at a lot of coins before you buy. Let her see what she likes. Start with raw coins and learn the series. If you find some nice ones, have them graded. Work on upgrades until you have a set that is well matched and one that you can be proud of!

While my daughter does not collect coins, she took a little interest to spend some time with me. I think you may find this time with your princess more valuable than the War Nickel Set!

Have you decided what qualities are important to you as far as eye appeal? War nickels come with much prettier toning than the clad nickels, so you may decide to look for that, or perhaps you prefer bright white. Also, will you be aiming to get FS coins?
