41' proof nickel...about as weakly struck as i've seen

was watching this on ebay...not my coin nor do i know the seller...ended unsold

but do they?
do jefferson nickel proofs come much weaker struck then this?

almost no ponytail
can't even make out the pillars of the memorial...just bases and tops

I think the strike is fine, just the dies were overpolished and started to remove some detail.

What Paul said looks correct. Certainly gives the impression of a poor strike, which at the end of the day really is the case when compared to a non polished die with an adequate strike.

I also have not seen one this poor!

I think it is MS, maybe PL. It has contact marks. If the coin were proof, is it apparently the only coin struck from these dies, as it would be a well-known variety by now.

This is not true. The proof coins of 1936-1942 were struck from heavily polished dies, and it is not unusual to see many of them with the more shallow design details missing or impaired. It is also not unusual to see die polish or other die work lines on the devices as a result. The Mint was obsessive in polishing these as collectors did not seem to care much for the non-brilliant proof coins that proceeded it (the matte versions). This is also the reason that true cameos from this period are scarce to rare.

I have to agree with this, it's like in 41 they started early on polishing the proof dies......they was just polishing fools fer that year,
I have 6 41's and all lack ponytail detail..........however the reverse is pretty strong on all of mine and not as weak as the OP pic'ed
and IMO the 41 has always been a anomaly in the 38 to 42's.............But then again I haven't seen em all
