Got a few of these new holders at the Long Beach show this weekend. Not sure if it was mentioned already, but I had read earlier that some think the new silver hologram along the bottom of the reverse side of the label is on the inside of the holder. That is not the case. It is on the outside of the holders just like the last one, but it appears to be printed on somehow and can't be peeled off (at least not easily), but it certainly can be scratched off.

The one thing I saw was the numbers or letters on the bottom of the holder. I wonder what it's for? Is it the graders initials that graded it?

I got a batch back in the new holders on Saturday. I decided to crack one of the coins out (unhappy with the grading) so I experimented with the holder a bit. I took a nearby brick and tried to scratch the holder face (where the coin is viewed)- it scratched very easily (no surprise). I tried scratching the Hologram- the plastic scratched but not the hologram. Once the coin was out I checked to see if the Hologram is on the inside; it's covered by plastic there as well. It must be imbedded somehow.

On another note I really like how the new holder back photographs:

    The hologram really pops!
    I love them Barber Halves.....

Are you referring to "PCGS" at the front bottom right?

<< <i>The current generation plastic was claimed to be "scratch-resistant". As we know, that doesn't mean it won't scratch (or scuff). I highly doubt the next holder will be much different. I'm not a plastics expert, but my intuition says clarity and scratch-resistance are generally inversely proportional. >>

Good news! They're not. I polished many dozens of holders over the last few weeks and the easiest scratches to remove were those on the newest holders.

Perhaps that's because the scratch-resistant ones don't damage as easily. Not sure. One thing is clear: polishing NGC holders is almost fruitless. I gave up on those.

Thanks for the update, Lance. Do you use the buffing wheel method?

No, I do it laboriously...by hand.

I have my first few "new" holders back this week. In my set one of the coins happens to be in the first slot of the PCGS Box. The new holder does not fit in there? Did anyone make that comment earlier in the thread that I missed?

I like the holder, but......what are the thoughts about this?

If you turn the slab backwards it will fit the first slot perfectly. The opposite happens with the last slot of the PCGS box.

I have some new holders with the same letters as yours on the bottom, and I have a few that are PSFHATA. I didn't notice it until now.

Probably just a lot identifier for the shells. Could be used to identify variations in the taggant.

Looks like quality control so if issues arise they can know what batch was bad. Alot of companies do this and test samples from the lot that they saved in order to assure quality over time.
