<< <i>One question, does the coin have to be in hand to make an entry? Shipping from some of the foreign countries is being advertised as 3-4 weeks. >>
No. There's no reason that should matter at all, unless you wanted to reimage something for better pictures. You're keeping what you buy, of course (or later selling it or giving it away or whatever you want to do with it.) We only need the coin's "virtual" presence in the game, and the facts of its purchase.
The only time not having one in hand would matter is if there were no pictures at all, of course. We need reasonably accurate pictures for the summary thread and the poll at the end. The quality of the pictures is up to you (or the person you bought the coin from). Obviously, something that looks "pretty in pictures" is going to be more popular in the final poll.
Glad you're not feeling overwhelmed by the coin chat. The coin shopping is supposed to be a challenge, just like it is for the rest of us.
Thatoneguy- nice dirt-cheap selection! Looks like a pretty nice BU example.
Did you know that was struck by the US Mint in Philadelphia? It even has the "P" mintmark!
Struck under contract for the Dutch government, though, so it qualifies for this contest.
I am traveling in North Carolina and am on a tiny device right now, making copy and paste difficult. So it will probably be Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning before I update the summary post above.
<< <i>Purchase #3 - I really like the eagle design, Italy has some cool stuff. eBay
For now I will be holding off on which coin I will be entering. >>
Italy indeed has some very nice coin designs. Those 5-lire pieces are nice. Just let me know which of your purchases you'd like to post as an entry. You can do this now if you like, because you can always change your entry at any time before the end of the month. I think the nicer of the pair of your 5-lire coins (whichever one it ends up being) would be a good entry.
I'll let LM decide if this entry will count or not! PS- if it was one of you who bought this for the contest, I'll of course let you claim it as your entry instead
What a coincidence. I just happened to have purchased something that I think qualifies on the 3rd - and then later I read this thread. I haven't responded till now as the item had not yet seen the mailman, but now that it is in the mail I will post the seller's photos for now (poor and I may be disappointed). I should have it in a few days at which time I will get some much better images.
I do own a couple of world coins but my collection is about 98% U.S. Coins and am just recently paying more attention to the 'darkside' - hope that does not disqualify me..
AA1Coins4Fun- I put your coin in the summary thread as Entry #2, above. (We can update the pictures of it when you get better ones, if you like.)
We're still waiting on thatoneguy and LarkinCollector to make their selections, though both have been posting some interesting choices.
Pokermandude- I don't think we can enter a coin you sold, though as you mentioned, the person you sold it to certainly could! (Say, would you mind deleting the gigantic pictures or posting smaller ones? Leave the link up if you like, of course.)
Musky- I have always liked that Australian florin type.
LarkinCollector- Nice choice. I think that is also the selection I would have made out of all the stuff you purchased and posted in the other thread. (Though the other ancient silver coin is pretty darn neat, too.)
I received the coin I entered in the mail today and threw it under the lens to get these better shots. If you could please update the existing, I would appreciate that.
Ok, interesting. here is my entry: just recently purchased on May o2 -2015 was free shipping. Cost CAN $ 2.99 Anyone is very welcome to help me decypher this coin and try and find out what it is , besides a 1859 Canada 1 Cent It is a narrow 9. but, what else is it? is it s basement job? or did someone at the mint "play around a bit"? any help is much appreciated.
coin weighs 4 grams and should weigh 4.54 grams. diameter is correct at 25.4 mm thickness is 1.12 mm and should be 1.21 mm
And I was not aware that country like this existed (still not sure about that) but apparently they did mint some coins in the past and here is my entry:
<< <i>3keepSECRETif2rDEAD- bravo, sir! Bravo! You're the first out of the gate, with a good entry.
I'll use the stock photo for a thumbnail in the summary thread above, but post your actual photo when the coin is received, and we'll use that in the final poll thread.
MS63 price (the highest listed) is $4.00. Does this mean you got hosed by paying $20.00 for an NGC MS64? Not at all. That's a cool coin, it's silver, and it's in NGC plastic. You certainly wouldn't have been able to get it in TPG plastic for the trend price, because slabs don't come for free. So I think it's a solid entry. And possibly undervalued in the priceguide, so no worries. Looks like a nice little coin.
Everybody else- see what he did? He posted pictures, a link back to the auction, and verification that he bought the coin today. Perfect. >>
This goes back to the first entry. The description of the coin is for a 25 pennia coin, but the actual coin is a 50 pennia coin, not that it makes much difference in the NGC/Krause price guide.
OK, sorry I've been away. I will return to the forums soon and do a little housekeeping here, then we can launch the poll thread and see who had the most popular entry.
So be sure and get your final choices posted for your entries, and I'll be back soon, probably just after the first of the month.
Jinx86- that Chinese dollar is indeed a terrific cherrypick... if it's real.
(And I'm not suggesting otherwise. I really don't know. A lot of the Chinese coins of that era look "fake" to me even when they aren't!)
But it looks like a very solid entry.
I assume you got the watch I sent you and all was satisfactory there, because the other party in our 3-way swap has sent me some money for the stuff you sent him.
If everyone will forgive my dithering for another day or three, I will get the poll up reasonably soon. (This is just another hit-and-run post since I'm still in semi-Yeti mode and have not completely come out of hiding yet.)

Wow, thanks pmac...I never even realized that it was a bigger coin. I knew I got sent the wrong NGC cert# and I PM'ed The Dark Lord about it and then fixed the pic in my OP. I was sort of bummed originally cause the coin in the listing looked to have some toning but I guess in the end, I got a coin worth twice as much in face value at least. Also with a pop of 5 less than the 25p in ms64
This has been fun. I also bought another world coin but chose not to enter it. I will post it after the contest is finalized. Thanks again for getting me involved by having this contest
I have finally put up the poll. If I read everything correctly above, we have nine entries (leaving in AA1Coins4Fun's Belize dollar, even though he said he was going to withdraw it).
I think everybody did great. Good luck, all!
The winner will get a choice between my 1580 Hungarian ducat or Musky1011's 1927 Australian florin.
The runner-up will get the remaining prize (whichever one the winner didn't pick).
Even if your selection doesn't end up winning a prize, I tip my hat to you, each and every participant. Thanks! I hope everybody had fun and is enjoying the stuff they bought.
