That was my first thought also, didn't even pay attention to the slab. I guess the collector is coming back out of me.

According to the Mint News Blog These new holders now are being used on all submissions certified by PCGS. Let us know if your submissions come back in these new secure holders.

gee does it dawn on anyone that the only way to cure the fake coin and slab issue is go after the major players who back and make these items

The detectable additives are a beautiful thing - PCGS can change them at any time, or even create an algorithm which pairs the additives and the cert number, essentially another layer of protection the counterfeiters would have to first decrypt.

There will always be counterfeiters and the good guys have to always be vigilant. PCGS seems on the right path.

any ideas on how to stop this and making new slabs is like shooting BB's at a battleship does no good

you must take out the backers and the makers to have any hope of countering this

Silverpop, respectfully, you are wrong this time. Watch the video or read the PCGS Blog article and you'll see why. There's way more going on with this slab than what meets the eye. Impossible to fake or counterfeit.

Awesome security advancements. The QR code is a huge convenience for mobile occasions.

In the video Don says they tested it in a eco chamber with accelerated aging and this cuts way down on the milk spotting issues. It's also "completely waterproof and airtight" which IMO is the most important advancement of all.

Not "impossible". I would say it would be difficult, expensive and impractical. The slab counterfeiters can continue using older slabs for quite some time. Years, really.

So, there is an obvious question that no one seems to be asking.

If the "special additive" to the plastic can only be detected by PCGS with some sort of device, how is this useful to consumers? Is PCGS going to start charging people to send their slabs in to be tested for authenticity? I don't get how an "invisible" feature is any security feature at all.

As for the QR code, that's not a security feature either. A QR code pointing to the cert lookup can be created for free on any one of hundreds of websites. Seems more cumbersome than just typing the 8 digits into the cert lookup webpage.

The clarity of the plastic looks great, and I like the "nested halves" slab design -- except for the annoyance that PCGS slabs no longer fit in NGC boxes.

Dang, I really liked that 4-way hologram... Makes sense it's all inside the slab now. I never understood from day one why it wasn't.

Perhaps you missed the bit in the Collectible Coin Protection Act that now addresses trademark violations of TPGs and gives them recourse to go after sellers of them. It doesn't solve the problem, but it produces a more pronounced disincentive for people to import and resell these. At the last new holder introduction, Don Willis said that fighting counterfeits is akin to an arms race with counterfeiters.

Maybe so, but the security could be increased by embedding a validation code into the QR code as well, rather than simply the cert URL. Looking up http:/www.pcgs.com/cert/25226081 would get you the cert page that a normal lookup would, but also show a notice that it's not a valid QR code link if one existed with the validation code. The QR code would have a paramterized URL like http://pcgs.com/qr.cfm?cert=25226081&chk=7fa52dd7, where the chk parameter is a random validation code assigned to the cert. Reputable online auction companies would have to agree to blur the QR code in pictures, and then you'd have to have the coin in hand to copy it. You could make a bot that tried to guess the code by trying all 4 billion possible validation codes for a cert, but that would be easy to detect and shut down from PCGS's IT.

This could be a precursor to a holder that's readable on the top edge. (Edit: the nested halves design, not the too thick for an NGC box bit)

I agree with brg5658. Perhaps it is "nearly impossible or impossible" to counterfeit this slab (at least in the short term) - but in no way has PCGS demonstrated that this new slab facilitates/ protects collectors in a third party transaction.
