On a One to Ten Scale, how Happy does this hobby make you?

braddickbraddick Posts: 25,103 ✭✭✭✭✭
Ok, one being sad and ten being ecstatically happy, what is the level of joy (or lack of) do you receive?
No poll, just provide a number and perhaps a reason why.
Personally, for me, I give this heck of a hobby a happy eight!

    8. More money would make it a 9 or 10.

I would have to say a 9. Some of the issues with coins bum me out some time and I think I should just find something else to collect but I always get over it in a couple of days.

Maybe an 8. The research of and the searching for the many varieties in both US and foreign coins keep me sane in my retirement.

The hobby itself gives me a 9(not a 10 only because so many things negatively effecting the hobby is beyond our control),
my selection process sometimes drags me down to a 7, but is still as beneficial to me as the nine. Very relaxing and the
hunt for a specific coin is the best.

I would say a 9 ... it definitely keeps my mind occupied ... and keeps me off the streets and out of jail.

My only loss of 1 point is when my submissions take an extra month to finish while others are posting how fast their submission came back.

The only thing worse than a long submission wait ... is after waiting 2 months for a submission to complete, you get 80% Genuines or DNC's.

It's got its ups and downs for me ... basically the colder it is outside, the more glad I am to have something like this to mess around with indoors. It's getting toward time to hang it up for a while and go fishing, though. Today ... 7.

I cannot give a number other than a straight middle of the road answer since this "hobby" can be a manic-depressive's nightmare.

When you find that totally AWESOME Variety or High Grade coin which becomes a Pop 1, the highs are nearly uncontrollable.

When you sell a coin in open auction that is valued at $500 and nobody bids.................for .99 cents, you want to slice your wrists!

Put me down for a 5.5

The overall process of building desire, the hunt, acquisition, cataloging, photography, integration builds a nice feeling and ownership is pretty cool. If I can keep that process pure and I'm not parking too much money on the sideline I'd say the hobby makes me feel pretty happy.

With that said, it's not more important than my wife and kids, business, career, tending my home and relationships. On my list of ten cool things I like to do, it prob comes in dead last. I guess at my age 43, I'm still able to do many physical hobbies and coins can wait a bit till I can't hike, motorcycle, rock climb, gold and gem prospect, 4 wheel, bird hunt, target shooting, weight lift, distance running etc. it's a decent winter activity for me, same as painting and jewelry work.

I told my friend the other day that if I had my money back that I spent on coins, I'd prob buy the same coins over again. He said not many folks would say that. I'm at a good place with the hobby, but I'll admit, the fire of desire isn't burning as bright as it did a while ago. Guess I met my goals for the most part. My biggest coin activity right now is checking in here once a day while I eat breakfast!

    Thanks

    3. Why am I still around? I have one foot out the door, but old habits die hard.

Why so low? The business side is unseemly. The people not much better, between the deeks, the grumps, the whiners, the out right liars, cheaters, and scammers. Then there is the huge "mine is bigger than yours" crowd, or "real collectors collect what I collect" crowd. All these apply to collectors and dealers. Then there is the "tin foil hat" crowd, which seems extremely large. Their bizarro world and political views are a terrible influence on the mental health of all they interact with.

So I vote 3, and have one foot out the door. Some days I am tempted to sell all I have and walk away and never look back, but it is a hard thing to do.

The realization that a slabbed Coin with Bean means nothing in the current market makes me very sad. Of course if I listen
to the screaming memes I'd think " OK there's at least one Dealer with integrity". But truth be told I did buy a few Coins from
a screaming meme already and one coin shows putty on it and another , with bean, now looks to me to be a doctored
    whizzed up POS.

SO - my purchases come strictly from the US Mint. The stuff they're putting out lately isn't too bad although the shipping and
    handling has suffered a bit.

Given the current situation with slabs and stickers, I'd give it all a 2. But the US Mint pulls it back up to about a 6.

Now if I could just dump off all that classic slabbed crap and get more modern PM Crap- I'd be set.

It ranges from a 2 to an 8.

Scientific research has consistently demonstrated that happiness comes much more from experiences than from material items. As I have recently acquired a few exceptional coins, I am closer to 8 right now. Last year, when I was selling coins and then dormant as a collector, it was a 2. I think that is why this hobby is much like a shark (as I have posted several times).

I have not found that to be the case (re: the people). I have made some wonderful friends in the coin hobby, especially from the forum, such that when we get together in person or communicate elsewhere, maybe 25% of the conversation will involve coins, including guys like Longacre, CRO, Lakesammman, XF45, Coinosaurus, JJS, Dahlonega, George Kellogg, CoinLieutenant, Wnuck, CoinGuy, SaintGuru, EVP, airplanenut, and too many more to name. I have other growing online relationships with people whom I have not yet met in person but hope to do so in the future. I know that if I drop into towns like Seattle, Atlanta, Chicago, DC, Dallas, or an "undisclosed hamlet in Connecticut", to name a few, I have peeps to have a beer or cup of coffee or go for a run. Similarly, if they have the misfortune of landing in my home town, they know to look me up, as well.

I guess that the "people" aspect of the hobby are what make it fun and interesting and challenging and energizing for me. Without this, I probably would not be engaged in the hobby. In fact, my collecting activity ramped and collection flourished because of the personal relationships. Before connecting with other collectors, I had trouble elevating as a collector and staying interested.

The coin hobby has been a great ride for the past 20+ years and I see no reason that it will change. Sure, personal priorities dictate my participation level at times, but it has always been there to come back to. I give it a solid 9. I think RYK's post above pretty much sums it up. I have met many amazing and knowledgeable folks over the years many of whom I consider my friends, everyone of them willing to freely share and help with anything.

This. I am in the process of selling some of my pieces and have found it quite illiquid for most coins worth less than $5k. I also think there is too much emphasis on plastic and stickers, and that this is leading to ridiculous prices in both directions. I have concerns about the long term stability of this hobby and market.

Well the Santa Clara Coin Show is going on at this moment 15 minutes away and I have no desire to be there.
Recovering from 9 straight days of 11 hour workdays on a job and another big project starts Monday, our little booth at an antique mall needs restocking, the great weather brought me out to the garden this morning, my band has two gigs coming up this month and I'd like to settle on a new 2nd guitar because the maple Epiphone is too heavy and doesn't match the tone of my '63 SG.....

I enjoy collecting coins immensely. As those who have read my posts know, I do not pursue plastic, paper, ink, stickers, holograms, signatures, or much metal younger than myself (47)

I'll buy and sell tarnish at reasonable prices, but I do realize that tarnish is relatively easy to produce given the right conditions so am careful.

A 200+ year old coin in VG is impossible to convincingly fake..... so far, and I like the history. If the coin is of a die pair that has fewer than a couple hundred known in any condition, wow!

I like coins, but I am not fond, at all, of coins "made for collectors", strongly preferring coins that served in commerce for years and years and by some miracle, ended up in my bare hands.

8 or 9 for me. I enjoy looking at my collection and adding to it. I remember finding most of the coins. I have truly enjoyed the conversations and activities around my search. I think the direction the industry has taken makes me glad I collect primarily 20th century coins (raw). I think the industry is out of whack and collectors know it. However, that has little to do with my hobby activities.

edited to add - tonight would be a good night to coin. My eyes can use a break from grading MBA project submissions.
