1973 OPC pack opened....holy s@#$!!!!

i opened a 1975 and 1976 opc wax pack earlier today and had a decent run of cards...being the gambler that i am, i got the feeling im on a roll...well, i was right today....i ignored my rational judgment of not wanting to destroy a rare pack and ripped into my 1973 opc baseball psa 7 wax pack...i am astounded by the results....well centered too...oh my! here is the order they were found:

    im totally speechless about the schmidt...near perfect centering front and back....perfect opc edges...only flaw is top right corner is slightly affected by the rough cut...not sure how psa would handle this as rough cut is normal for opc....i think it is a solid 8 all day!

    BLOWN AWAY!!! WOW!!! I think caps lock and triple exclamations are warranted. That's a screamer...and OPC. Just WOW and Congrats!
    52-90 All Sports, Mostly Topps, Mostly HOF, and some assorted wax.

    i concur. call it no self discipline if you will, i cant stand to have unopened lying around...i either sell it or open it, every time. im still pacing around the house over this one! dam that one soft corner! no really i couldnt be happier with this one!!!

    i wouldnt even classify it as a "soft" corner...more like the rough cut groove landed on the corner

    Congratulations, that's awesome.


    That's a good looking Carlton/Ryan either, which almost gets lost amid the well-deserved excitement over the Schmidt.

    If it were graded based on comparison with the other couple recently listed ones on ebay (which it won't be), the Schmidt should deserve a 9. The 8.5 that 4SC has listed has an upper corner that looks worse in the scan than the one from this pack. The 8 that keeps getting relisted and ended again today has notably worse centering and obvious staining/discoloration within the white border area.

    I have a couple PSA 10's from 1973 OPC (certainly not anything like a Schmidt though) and they have rough OPC edges with what could almost be chipping along the edges on back due to the rough cut, so don't let that Canadian cutting worry you.

    thanks for the encouraging words...im obsessively studying it and i think its worthy of a 9 as well...the corner in question is still square, not touched, just rough like certain spots on the edges of 70s opc cards...the centering is amazing front and back...everything other aspect looks fantastic...still in shock!!!

    That is an awesome pull, Phillip, congrats!!

    I have opened quite a few 73 OPC wax packs over the years and submitted many cards to PSA and I think you have a definite 8, but a good shot at a 9 on that Schmidt as long as the grader is familiar with the nuances of the OPC rough cut. As pointed out, the Ryan/Carlton is a nice card, too~centering probably keeps that one at an 8. Woodson and Breazale look very nice, too.

    Awesome pack, congrats! I don't know if u have an itchy Palm but I say go buy a lotto ticket too! Again, congrats on a beauty of a Schmidt rc.

    The possibility of what might be under a wrapper is what got me started as a kid and what drew me back in as an adult. Just think of that poor Schmidt, waiting 42 years to be held and cherished, knowing it was one of the lucky ones, printed and cut just right at the factory, slipped into a stack of cards without damage--right in the middle where it was safe from gum and wax--and wrapped tightly to await its new owner. But it wasn't bought; no, its pack was saved, not opened. The cards it held hidden, not loved as they deserved. Then even the pack was put in plastic for preservation and display, and all hope seemed lost. But now, unexpectedly, it and its friends are finally free and the toast of the town. Look how proud it is! And think of how many more wonderful cards are out there, fingers crossed, hoping to be opened, waiting to show the world their glories. Set them free! Show them love!

    Or, you know, open an expensive vintage pack and be completely and utterly disappointed with long-forgotten players on miscut cards. Could go either way.

    What a rush that pack must have been. Hope I get to open one like it one day.

    I would love a 9 but 8 is more realistic....no matter what number grade is assigned, it is one hell of a card and a pull that i will never forget!

    Congrats, one of the best reasons to frequent these boards! I've always hoped to hit something like that in a 70's pack but haven't had any luck yet. I got a few Topps packs in PSA holders graded low. I think I'm going to go for it! Again, congrats and I don't think it matters what grade it gets, the eye appeal is sweet

    I have come to terms with the fact that i cant resist opening these old packs...i still love it even when its a total bust! I never dreamed id actually pull this card...hell, the 73 set is so loaded i think $150 ish for a pack is a reasonable gamble considering how loaded this set is! Same with 75 mini wax...it is nice to have a payoff like this after numerous worthless packs in the past!
