I find it odd that nothing has been said about the new PCGS weighted top pop coins in your sets?

I got about 5 extra points for 5 top poppers I have.

I saw that and thought for sure someone would start a thread on the subject. In my Merc set I just sold, I would have had a pretty big boost since I had about 13 Top Pops, many of which were stand alone Top Pops. Interesting adjustment to the weights. I wonder how it may have changed things for different people. I wonder if a few TOP SETS got bumped to 2nd because of this. image

The email doesn't mention when the new bonus points would show up on the Registry... anyone know?

They are color coded yellow for pop 1 and gray for pop 2 coins in your edit feature. However you must "publish" your set by adding or subtracting a coin as far as I can tell.

They were added as soon if not before the email was sent out.

There's a little bug that I'm sure will be fixed but currently still exists. If a variety coin is accepted in a non-variety spot and the coin is top pop for the variety, it is bonused as if it is top pop for the spot, period. I emailed BJ already so they are aware.

    I think it's a cool improvement.

Does not seem to apply to variety sets.

Some strange things with the pop reports/certificates today. Some no longer exist, but still exist in registry sets and are in coinfacts.

1tommy brought it up on the Registry forum.

Doesn't pertain to me so I didn't give it much thought.

On the surface it seems it'll create even more clamor for the top coins.
Those who have them will be even tougher to unseat.

I currently have a couple of yellow 1-0 coins in one of my registries (and the set is published), but the rating has not changed since they instituted the new calculus. It's still the same it has always been. I notified BJ about the problem so hopefully they'll get all the glitches worked out shortly.

TDN - I looked at your TD set and all but the last coin would be pop. Of those all but 1 would be yellow and that one would be grey.

Just my take on the Registry sets.

First we all had to get used to (some of us are still not) to the + system and that has affected alot of the older sets put together.

Now instead of Adjusting the Set Composition and the weight those coins get(depending on rarity) they come up with this Pop Tops and giving 1 or 2 full bonus points for that coin.

This tells me it is no longer necessary for me to submit any coins that are not going to grade as a POP Top.

Instead of promoting building a set there now rewarding those few who can spend any amount to have the one best coin.

Which I believe they already get extra points for having so now there rewarding them twice.

Building a registry set has always been a fun thing to do and human nature is we strive to collect the best we can afford.

All this does is promote the best of the best and the money will now flow for the 67 + that truly look like a 66.

Buy the coin and NOT the holder will no longer matter to those chasing the registry sets.

It truly has me thinking of stopping now before I get buried just like all those folks who paid up for a 67 only to now have there Top pops disappear when the + hit. JMO Enjoy image

Not exactly, because for copper even if you have a Brn or R&B excample, it gets a bonus. Its not just the absolute top pop in red.

And of course-its a marketing tool to sell those top pop coins that bring the most money - dealers will love it.

I very much disagree with a LOT of this. With some series this could be correct I guess but with my Mercury Dime Variety Set I had 13 Top Pop Varieties! Most of them I Cherrypicked and made myself so that is one area in which brain power and a good eye trumps money every time! With 26+ varieties in the set, it can make a HUGE difference.

No Offense taken, but Let me ask you This, are YOU still building a registry set?

Or are you just a Seller? Seems to me all your great cherry picks have been sold to Real Collectors?

Tommy, everyone of my top pops I also made. I see nothing about this benefiting only high end collectors, Heck, most of mine have been under $20 cherry picks off ebay. No reason I plan on stopping nor do I feel it changes the finacial situation between collectors with more resources. Fact is, we, the variety collectors are the majority of "producers" of variety coins on the market. We pick an upgrade and sell off the old example. Not that does not hold for non variety sets, unless of course you are comfortable buying raw coins to gain a better grade.JMHO

I was building that collection for 5 years! Yes, I recently sold it, for many reasons however. So now I am doing some flipping but I have already started to buy/collect in different areas that interest me outside of Mercury Dime Varieties. I have collected and loved Mercury Dimes since I was 8 years old when my father introduced them to me. I really do not know what to say when you think I am not a real collector because I have recently sold things. To call the people that bought my coins Real Collectors is something that I am not really sure about. First of all, I do not know them and would never judge someone that way. Second, it seems they may have decided to just go the easy route by letting their bank accounts work for them, rather being a Real Collector that learns everything about the series, does the hard work and possibly Cherrypicks the varieties themselves.

I guess since I don't have a high ranking registry set, I'm just not a real collector. Really? My passion and interest in the series started over 30 years ago. I do not see that changing any time soon. I'm glad that you have had the financial stability to continue your collection as you see fit. Pissing on someone else because they might have had some tough times financially and then telling them that they aren't a real collector is really a low blow type of move. You might be a Real Collector but it seems there are some other words that could be used to describe you.

<< <i>1tommy - You think building a registry set makes you a "Real Collector"?

The email from PCGS affects all those WHO DO have a registry set. There are many great collectors who do not need the plastic.

But this new rule affects those that DO...........And this is NOT just about varieties it is about all the coins in your REGISTRY Set and them giving more points because a coin is a POP TOP.

Many sets are built because of having a passion for a series and they do not have to be POP Tops for that person to enjoy building a set.

But if you want to comment about the real email that was sent out than yes you have to HAVE a Registry Set. This is how the email starts off. Dear PCGS Set Registry Members, and those are the ones I refer to as Real collectors............Enjoy image

First I NEVER said you had to have a high ranking set to be a Real Collector. Second since you are bringing up the financial card, if I remember correctly you left this site for almost a year not by choice but YOUR actions.

Do you really want to go there? Ethics is part of collecting. I am also sorry that you feel I am pissing on YOU? But your actions in the past do show that you take no responsibility in your own financial planning. So its ok to buy coins that you cannot afford?

You are Not building a Registry set so this email that was sent out means nothing to you. Any true collector knows how to read a book and find coins for themselves and they don't need plastic to make them such.

This is NOT about varieties, this is about what PCGS is doing for ALL the coins in the set.

Again this email was sent out to those who actually have a PCGS REGISTRY SET(Those are the ones I refer to as real collectors) so if you are not building a registry set than move on.

Its funny in my original post I mention how they could have better served ALL those who are building a registry set and yet none of those comments were brought up. I also never mentioned variety coins as this new rule affects ALL the coins in the set. Enjoy image

Looks like the other stuff has been fixed, but this hasn't. Any word from BJ if they plan to "fix" this or are they going to consider lower graded top-pop varieties worthy of the additional bump?

The yellow highlight is a nice touch. Kudos to PCGS for following the SSDC's lead on this (right down to the shade of yellow). image
