I've used the padded mailers but for only a few cheap moderns. Usually the flat rate box and registered for the better stuff. Don't forget the tape on all seams.
Ive done padded envelopes but rarely, and only for inexpensive single coins. Otherwise I always use boxes since I almost always do multiple coins to save on shipping costs.
I've used the USPS small/medium flat rate boxes with signature confirmation along with insurance. If they were "high brow" coins I would send 'em registered.
I would would not use a padded envelope, why take the chance?

Since auction companies have often sent me $500 and up coins in flat priority mailers, I figure envelopes with the sandwich corrugated inserts are acceptable. Hugh Wood does not require box in a box for their coverage.
Box with lots of padding so nothing moves and the items are well protected. I normally also put the coins in those sticky cardboard fold over things that auction houses use to send stuff to me...then pad around that inside the box.

I figure since the coins are nice enough to warrant having them graded at PCGS, I want to make sure they don't get damaged during shipment, so of course I pack them in a box.
