I make a lot of coin purchases on eBay, including a lot of raw material (mostly XF to AU, sometimes MS). About 1/3 of what's shipped to me (I don't bother with anything that looks messed with in the listing photos) has been cleaned or messed with and not disclosed in the listing. I realize most people selling don't even know what a cleaned coin is, so I don't have any hard feelings- I just want to return it. eBay has started a new return process where you need to select a reason for the return. None of the choices really seem to fit coin returns; I don't want to leave the seller a "Black Eye". I typically select "It's the wrong size or doesn't fit". I'm hoping that doesn't affect the sellers rating.
Most of the time eBay offers to sell you a return label for $2.50. It's a good deal; it saves me a trip to the Post Office and is a little less expensive than if I mail it myself. I went to return an item yesterday and the offer was there to print a label (for a $140 coin). The price was $65.00 to print the label!!! Absolutely ridiculous. Obviously I didn't print the label. I checked again this morning- the same price. I wonder if this is an error or is eBay hoping to make a killing off of these return labels?

I have so few returns that I generally just offer to pay return shipping even though my listings say the Buyer pays, I guess I'll need to stop that generosity just to keep from getting stuck.
That's obviously a rip and must be an error. Unfortunately, who's going to wait an hour on the phone to tell them something's broken?
Remember the USPS has click and ship, small flat rate box is less than $7.50 if I remember right.
Reason I remember higher price is I always get Signature Service on them.

I don't purchase from dealers who are known for selling crap; it's a waste of time. Most of my purchases come from Mom & Pop operations that are just trying to sell off some coins they bought/ inherited. I would much rather give them the benefit of the doubt.

I do know if you select "Item was defective" the seller gets a defect; a few defects and the seller looses their 20% fee discount from eBay. it's my belief that eBay came up with the new system to increase seller defects so they can reduce the number of people getting the 20% fee discount.

That is exactly what eBay did. Also, if they select not as described, they can print a free label. Black mark and pay for a return, all in one nice little package!
If you select "Wrong size" the seller won't get a defect, but a "not as described" will.
eBay is not an approval service, and eBay does monitor the number of returns a buyer does and can put restrictions on your account if those are excessive.
Sellers can also report buyers for abusing returns which can also put a flag on a buyers account.

I suppose in the end I'm hurting myself by selecting "Wrong Size" when making a return; it does make it look like I'm a fool wasting other peoples time/ money. I'm certainly not going to accept cleaned coins that were not discernible in the listing because eBay believes I'm abusing my return privilege, however (it hasn't happened yet). I also don't want to let eBay hut the little guy either by selecting "not as described".
I guess my only option will be to quit buying when eBay thinks I'm too big a problem- that will make my wife happy.

Do all auto returns on eBay generate free return postage or just some of them?
You are still better off just sending the seller a note and returning it directly. (Like it was for 15 years until they decided to make it worse!)

I think you're right- I'll do it that way.
I've never had so many returns and they're all SNAD except for one sale that was 6 weeks old when I was hit up for a return - yes! As long as the page is available to the buyer they can request a remorse return. 30 days? BWHAHAHAHA! Did feepay forget to mention that?
The really cool thing with a SNAD claim is not only can you saddle the seller with round trip postage, and a defect, but feepay keeps the final value fees to boot! Go ahead and kick some tires on some 4 and 5 figure coins coins and then do a SNAD claim. No skin off your nose and the evil seller will eat up to $250 in fvf if they have a store, and your word is golden against theirs. Ain't feepay awesome?
There's a saying on the feepay forums that don't list anything that you can't afford to have stolen because it is going to happen.
Anyone listing expensive stuff on feepay deserves a slap across the back of their head.
