what was the point of asking the seller to end the listing so you could buy it outside of ebay ? so you could buy I for less than it should have sold for ?
regardless of how many posts I have, I don't consider myself an "expert" at anything

How is it that they don't correlate when they are about the same transaction? You attempted to buy a very expensive coin off ebay way under it's value as stated by you and then you asked about the protection afforded you through PayPal because you asked the ebay seller to cancel the other bids. How am I wrong as this is what happened as stated by you the OP? I can refer to you as a "bad guy " if I feel like it even though I did not as they were your words. How do you think the other people bidding on the coin would feel knowing you talked the seller into pulling the coin early to sell it to you? I do have to say at this point they would be happy as some where in this process someone is pulling a quick one. If this were a legitimate auction and the coin got pulled I would be upset how about you?

Go back and re-read my post. I said he is covered. And even if he wasn't, he could always do a chargeback through his CC company.
And as to what ebay has to do with it... off-ebay sales of ebay-listed items are technically violations of ebay policy, as you are using their site and exposure to sell the item even though the actual transaction takes place outside ebay. In simpler terms, you're hosing ebay out of their fees after using them to promote your item... and they tend to not like that. It's almost impossible to enforce however, and the participants in such transactions obviously will never acknowledge doing so to ebay.
It would be interesting (albeit impossible) to know how many millions of dollars in off-ebay transactions occur each year and how much they lose in potential fees from people who game their system.

Whether he went outside of eBay isn't relevant to the PayPal situation. There is no reason that PP needs to know that eBay was ever involved and if they did know, it shouldn't matter in the event of a claim. Of course we don't know anything about the deal or terms involved. The buyer seems smug to the point that he can't lose no matter what. My gut tells me that someone is probably gonna lose a trailer.
