Crossover - DNC, yet a certification number is generated?

oih82w8oih82w8 Posts: 13,121 ✭✭✭✭✭
I sent some coins in for Crossover and five of six made it...one did not. It happens. But a certification number was generated. Why does this happen? By creating cert numbers for DNC coins, it takes that number out of the total number of coins "certified". Would this skew the numbering system since they did not crossover into PCGS holders?

It doesn't really skew the numbering system as much as it illustrates that the numbering system is used to uniquely identify every coin they see, whether it ends up in a holder or not. Even fakes are given numbers. It's logistically simpler than having some coins get numbers and some not.

Think the number is assigned by receiving and process control carry it though to mailing to customer.

Correct. Every coin which comes in gets a number as this is how coins are tracked within the grading system.

    Makes sense...thanks for the responses.

A serial number is generated once a coin is entered into the database by the receiving staff regardless of whether or not that coin eventually ends up in a holder.

Will they tell you why it did not cross if requested or paid for?

If a coin doesn't have a number it does not exist.

<< <i>Will they tell you why it did not cross if requested or paid for? >>

Exactly what's to tell other than the fact that the coin did not meet PCGS's opinion of whatever minimum grade the submitter specified.

    It's that simple.

    Yes, it's that simple.

But a little more info would be nice. Would it have crossed at a lower grade? Was there a problem like cleaning? Is it not genuine?

I agree it would be nice to know why a coin did not cross. I don't think you can get that information, though.

It wasn't that long ago that PCGS would send along a note with the failure to cross...the grade and color, in PCGS's opinion. That became another problem when subsequent submissions differed. I'm sure I wasn't the only one angry about that.

Yep, it's how they track the coin.

I will find the answer to the question about giving the reason for a DNC in a short time. I just sent a very nice request to our hosts asking for the reason one piece out of my recent submission did not cross.
I just received said "DNC" for a somewhat valuable piece in an old 6 digit ANACS slab that I thought was a no brainer.
I would so very much like to, indeed I NEED to know why it did not cross before I do something stupid like crack it out. Which is why I chose to opt for a crossover in the first place, as I can in no way afford to take that chance.
I will let you guys know how it turns out.
My question. Are crossover attempts tracked? If I were to resubmit, do they have the piece on file? Thus assuring that it has no chance? Hmmm . . . . if they are tracked, that would address the possibility of issuing a different rationale for a subsequent submission.

Good luck with that. I expect you will get a canned response and nothing specific about your coin. But it's worth asking.

What is the TPG grade on the holder and what was the minimum acceptable grade you cited? If you cited "any" and it didn't cross that means there is a fatal problem like improper cleaning or questionable color). If you required a minimum grade then failing to cross is less conclusive.

To answer your question, no, PCGS does not track the coin by its third party holder cert number and will not know the cross has been tried before. Some collectors worry PCGS will remember coins from earlier attempts and it will hurt their chances. Nonsense. A coin would have to be seriously different for it to stand out among the many thousands of coins graded daily. Regardless, why should it matter?

It is in a no problem six digit small ANACS holder at MS61. I requested cross at grade. I was actually expecting (silly) an upgrade to 62.
I could have specified MS60 I suppose, but never dreamed it would downgrade in any case.

I just saw something about the quarterly special was for NGC only. Did I miss that somehow? Digging now to try to find that. Four of my five were ANACS.

Nope, no restrictions on the service. NGC, ANACS, IGC are listed on the advertisement specifically.

The crossover special ends soon. Take advantage.

MS61 is not a very desirable grade, generally. Often (but not always) these are baggy and lacking eye appeal. A drop to AU58 might actually improve the coin's value. It's probably worth trying again and citing a lower grade. I say "any" if I want it in PCGS plastic.

PCGS is pretty conservative with crosses...not being able to see the whole coin and looking through plastic. You'd probably do better by cracking it if you are certain it will grade problem-free.

Value on this piece doubles from AU58 to MS61.
I will probably resubmit and state a min MS60 to see what will happen. But if they think they see circulation or cleaning (that the old ANACS missed and certainly I see none) I will sell as is.
I like the coin, or I would not have bought it. But I can't afford to take that kind of financial hit. Small potatoes to some . . . . but not I!

well, as far as i know, 85 means DNC if you specified a minimum grade. on the cert label they put:

    coin number.85/cert number

so, if your coin is ngc62 and you want to cross at 62 or higher and they believe it's a 61, for example...so it doesn't cross, it's something like:

    9567.85/24567888

this happens a lot. but, mine was returned:

    9567.85+/24567888

i made the numbers up, but hopefully you can see what i am trying to say. so, i guess this means they thought it was a plus coin? weird

I have had several DNC 85+ coins returned to me.

The best I can figure is it is the high end of the grade previous to the one requested.
