1917-D Standing Liberty Quarter, interesting auction

First, I'll say I have no interest in either of these auctions. I was not a bidder or buyer on either sale, it's just an area in ebay which I peruse.

So, apparently this guy buys a cleaned 1917-D SLQ and sends to PCGS. Comes back UNC details cleaned. Turns around and tries to sell it at the original price, now details holdered. His pictures of the reverse make me think cleaned, although maybe it's the photo.

Original auction is not as clear. The photos, although large, don't jump right out as cleaned.

Overall, if this got into a P64FH holder, it's worth about the price paid. There are so many coins out there in holders, unless you're thinking you're getting a 66 or something, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to try this.

The first auction you linked to is for a P mint coin, not a D mint?

Interesting it sold for virtually the same money holdered.

Ebay -I love seeing how that marketplace works.

The 1917-D appears to be an error in the listing.

Have this in my watch list.

But maybe the seller didn't have a return policy (i know ebay does and he's just not aware of that aspect that he can actually
    get a refund.

Sure looks like he refuses to lose money on it by listing his original purchase invoice.

The cleaning seems to be very light AKA a quick dip in ezest and was left with a little residue that PCGS didn't like.

Personally if I had the money to do so I would buy this coin and stick it in a Dansco and just let it retone it has some wicked nice details
and would look really nice retoned.
Dansco BU washie set empty holes:
    32d,32s,34d,35d,36d,37,37d,37s,38,38s,39s.

Probably not cleaned at all just uber dipped...

Pretty common on SLQ's and many skinned examples are making it into graded holders these days.

Actually the images do show a subdued lifeless lackluster surfaced SLQ.

I guess this was about a $100+ education for the buyer between cert, ebay, paypal, & shipping fees.

You're right, I wasn't really looking at the mint mark.

It's amazing what lighting does, and I agree, it funny to see how the ebay market works.
