I posted this message in this thread, but apparently it applies here as well

Some may recall a couple of months ago I put some threads up pointing out the mob mentality that happens here.

I used to post here from about 2001-2004 and one of the things I learned to dislike about this forum was the herd mentality.

A couple of months ago I learned from a PM about the suicide of a YN I used to know from that period. When I knew him, he was just a kid and we (forum members) used to give him coins.
When he became an adult, I heard he got into the coin business but had problems and owed people on this forum money.

I don't know the details but I've seen the heard mentality here and they hounded him publically here.

This is what lead to Don Willis updating of the rules in Feb 11.

This is a forum about coins - not a personal soap box to attack someone over a bad business transaction.

You got a refund after 9 days because the seller couldn't deliver a coin.

Geeze it happens. Learn to deal with disappointments in life. Don't do business with them again.

But don't try and get the villagers riled up so they will hound someone publicly for your satisfaction over a bad business deal.

That is not the purpose of this forum.

That's a darn shame that the linked video has been taken down. It was such a perfect example of delusions of grandeur fueled by overuse of stimulants. It was so creepy that it held a certain fascination.

Here is a old one let's see how long it take for him to wipe it out. Old on how to pick up grils maybe how to BS them. No wonder they think all men are dog's. Like this mutt you put this stuff out there and now you don't want any one to see it? You can't unring a bell.

<< <i>I think Alts are kind of sad and pathetic, repeatedly trying to force one's self on a group who has repeatedly pushed you away and regected you is a little unstable IMO. If you can't hold your head up and be upfront with who you are and what you represent then that speaks volumes about who you are and what you represent. This is nothing new for BNB and just goes to show you nothing has changed >>

I agree with most of what you say with the exception of "repeatedly trying to force one's self on a group who has repeatedly pushed you away".

That sounds as if the "group" can control the forums which it's known that it cannot. It makes it sound as if new members must be "accepted" by the "group" in order to participate in open discussion which everybody knows is simply untrue.

If someone gets banned by the actual administrators of the forums for some infraction that they feel strongly about yet, they want to participate in other discussions, then the only alternative is to simply get a different account.

I do not see anything wrong with this at all.

Perhaps it is this "group" mentality that makes others feel that the PCGS Forums are populated by elitist snobs that "drive" others away?

There is a tried and true psychological ploy that often affects the power level of the troll.

Whether you agree or not, and perhaps even better if you don't, the focus of attention on him validates the troll's purpose in being here.

Weird analogy because it's so far to the opposite that it's got the inverse dynamic. image Simple believing in the presence of the good in Tinker Bell was enough to nurture her. Any response to a troll is an encouragement. Even a compliment.

The ploy is the application of a principle of operant condition called extinction. My Nana used it all the time. The less attention to my complaints and outbursts, the less my willingness to bother to try.

"If he doesn't shut up, just ignore him" - as in DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS.

I've seen a recent thread on the Sniffer that I find scurrilous. Pheromone-starved fetishists indeed! Next photo on a campaign towards a bamming? It could lead to a series of altered photos.... of a bedraggled yet alert K-9 with a certificate of commendation from the DEA and a 50% disability due to job-related cocaine abuse. Also accompanied by a rejection letter from the TSA despite a pleading under the American Disabilities Act. A shot of him and that 3 1/2 Legged Anteater with the intermittent sinus issues, the workhorses of the sniffing room.

If someone were to start a thread that leads, even if a little bit illogically, to the kind of images just described, it is an affront to our intelligence to not recognize this as a subtle form of provocation. Even respected Forum members can slip. . . image

Do not dignify such remarks with a response. . . . . image

Being insane doesn't necessarily make him a crook. As long as he is bank rolled by his mom I wouldn't worry too much about losing one's money. If that ever changes then I would be a little more carful before sending a check until the coin was in hand.
