Can anyone recommend a good book to read before diving in to build a collection on Capped Bust half dollars?

Bust Half Fever by Edgar Souders. Go for the 2nd Edition.

Ed used to post here often (haven't seen him here in awhile). His book is very insightful and contains info on the CBH series you won't find anywhere else.

Brian's suggestion is good. When you take the plunge, then pick-up Overton's 3rd edition on CBHs.

If I could have only 1 book on the series it would be the Peterson book...

If you can wait another year or so there might be a whole new book available for the series...image

Before diving in, I would say Bust Half Fever by Souders. That may very well cause you to buy them all and update them. I have the 3rd and 5th edition of Overton's Capped Bust Half book (actually, the 5th edition is by Parsely, I think). Many prefer the 3rd to the 4th or 5th....I haven't transitioned to the 5th and may never. I purchased and used Peterson's book, but preferred Overton. However, I recently went back to Peterson, and it is actually well done, so I am giving it a re-read, having been re-invigorated by FUN to get back into CBHs.
    Good luck!

This. The Overton and Peterson book, while important, are more technical. The Souders book is more fun to read.

Agreed, Souders first, then Peterson or Overton. I think Peterson is somewhat easier to use, but it's a personal preference thing. I have all 5 Overtons, because I'm a book nut.
