    funny. obviously the real date, originally on the coin, was either 1798 or 1799. Interesting that the guy that filled the plug thought he could get away with changing the coin to a better date. What's most disturbing is the PCGS "small date, large letters" attribution.

    To be fair to PCGS it certinly isn't the large date, small letters image

    The date contains a crudely shaped 96. The reverse of the dollar is the Heraldic Eagle design, which was not used until the 1798 dollars were produced. The reverse of a real 1796 dollar contains the Small Eagle design. It's a mechanical error on the part of the coin doctor.
