    << <i>

<< <i>I suggest you send it in for authentication to PCGS and get it photographed by them and report back to us, we are all hoping you strike it big. >>

I'm wondering if PCGS wouldn't take the coin for certification/authentication gratis, just for the exposure of handling it? I'd call customer service and
ask about such a submission. Couldn't hurt, right? >>

I'm sure they are chomping at the bit for this piece.

<< <i>mark, that is very true. the philadelphia mint has always had the gold during ww2 but it was used for different purposes legally. the story that wooden told me about his uncle ignatz has intrigued me of the possibilities. >>

Don't send the coin to Wooden's people cause my cousin has direct bloodline relations via his great grandmother who had an illegitimate child with her. Our family has the trial proceedings from family court to prove it. The direct bloodline makes him the true heir to the coin his terrier pooped out in the attic for toning. We can't wait to get it first strike certified by Coin Relics Authenticity Partnership.

Given what I believe, and what Fred and others have stated, I would go back to the jeweler who said it was made of gold and ask him to make an offer on it. Anything over silver melt and I would sell it to him.

this is better than just popcorn, we have the full Looney toons menagerie tossed in... image

I'll get past the 28Kt gold, saw that as a typo for 18kt.

    Let's see...

<< <i>fred, im not the most expert, but i had a jeweler tell me the coin was made of gold, silver added to the back, and ive had coin dealers check on the detailing. the part im worried about most is the authenticity. >>

So now the story is changing... first it was PCGS' certified dealers.

<< <i>after i got several opinions on it from jewelry and PCGS certified dealers in my area >>

Which we all knew was bunk because PCGS doesn't certify dealers, they authorize them to submit coins to PCGS on behalf of customers.

    Let's see...

    << <i>i never said i was a coin genius... >>

    100% agree

    << <i>i asked for people opinions >>

and you don't like the answers so you are arguing with us...

<< <i>its not like im makin stuff up, who would be that messed up to seek info on something that dont exist? >>

Look in the mirror OP... It's fake or gold plated. Not authentic. Period.

<< <i>i got experts baffled, me baffled, and everybody i know. its a huge WTF? piece, which is why im here for help now... >>

No, only bafflement is on YOUR side of the keyboard

All in all, best laugh this month!

It's not legit. No way did the mint accidentally strike this walker in gold, this just does not happen. So, your coin is a complete fake. This is the best answer there is. Not only that but the mint was not striking any gold at all that year so there is no way it could have happened accidentally at the mint.

This has to be one of the oddest threads I have seen in a while. The fact that the OP claims there is no possible way to photograph the coin makes the story that much more enjoyable. No camera. No camera phone. No cameras on his laptop, iPad, desktop computer, or friend's or relatives' phone/ipad/computer?

Does anyone reading this thread believe the OP's coin will turn out to be what OP believes (or states) it to be?

I've seen many 28K gold state quarters. Apparently the US Mint has a major quality control problem.imageimage

All I can say is WOW! I saw a couple times that beatsbyave knows of a second rarity just like this one we have not seen. How does this play into reality?

Yeah, it was funny.....about 10 years ago when it was all the rage. Not so much anymore.

  • If beatsbyave knows where another one of these mega rarities are, then why not share that and see if that person has a photo? Sound like gold plated junk to me, if that. Whatever the case, it should be interesting to see how this turns out, especially since our OP does not claim to be an expert but quickly lets the experts know that they are wrong.

I think the OP has it backwards, it is probably a silver coin with gold plating on the obverse. They have different ways to gold plate coins, it may have simply been dipped on a solution like this-

  • bsshog40bsshog40 Posts: 3,970 ✭✭✭✭✭
My guess would be a gold plated coin. And as Bob mentioned, probably a jewelry piece.

The OP should know that gold plated Walking Liberty halves are VERY COMMON.

Here's one that Littleton Coin Company in Littleton, NH distributed. Happens to be a 1943. Rub off some of the plating on the reverse, and you get exactly what the OP described ...

And my guess is that beatsbyave will ultimately understand how silly this is and never show his face here again.

Too bad. Pride and ego get in the way too often.

I think he's probably cracking up at all the button pushing and string pulling going on in this thread, and that he got so many to waste their time posting to him.. the 28K should have been a dead giveaway, imo.

I have a picture of a 1934 gold walker, linked below. Maybe yours was taken off the money clip, which would explain the silver on the back. Note it takes a little extra bit for this link to come up to the real picture.

    A 1934

Note this is from the Silvertone Museum Mint Collection: This exquisite gold-toned money clip includes a genuine Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollar layered in pure 24 karat gold (1916-1947). Does not include currency. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

A real gold one would weigh much more, as others have posted, but this one looks real nice. I would just weigh it, and that would solve your dilemma.
