What are VF/XF common date Wheat Cents being bought at?

Can anyone help me out with what I should expect to get for common date wheat cents in VF/XF if I sell them without having to ship them? Just looking for a current ballpark number. Thanks

  • It really doesn't matter what grade a 'common' wheat cent is in. 3-4c is the max you should pay.

Locally to me, if they're 40's & 50's - they buy for .02 each. If they're mixed with earlier commons, .03.

I see rolls priced for sale at $2.00-$2.50 each (.04 - .05) in most shops/stores here.

So I understand correctly before I go in to haggle over .005 lol, I should get the same for the coin on the right as the one on the left?

Just why would anyone pay 3 cents for a common date, circulated wheat cent?

Who actually wants them and why?

Plenty of folks. Look at sold listings on eBay - it's not uncommon to see bulk lots go for .06-.10+ each.

I've found lots of neat RPMs, errors, etc buying bulk lots locally - but... I take the source into consideration.

When buying at auctions which are primarily consignments from our local coin shop, well... I don't pay that much - because I know the dealer has gone through them for his cases.

I know most of the auctioneers in my area, and always ask where the cents came from. They will tell me straight - from a dealer, from the guy who used to own the antique store, my own junk, etc - I bid low on those, if at all. When he tells me they're from the family of a person who passed, or found in a dresser when they were cleaning out a house, stuff the guy had form 30 years ago and hasn't gone through, etc - I'll take a shot and even go up to 10 cents each if they're not only 40's & 50's.

I've filled probably 50 old whitman albums (usually get the albums with older coin purchases, so no cost in them) with all but key dates, and keep cycling them through coin club auctions getting +/- 20 cents a coin, pick up even 1% of a bulk lot of decent $1-3 coins, or a bunch for my 25-cent bin, or an error you can get $10-20 for, and it all works out.

But... even breaking even, or selling the dreck for $2.00 a roll, the fun for me is spending time with the kids. My oldest is 21 and out of the house, but we spent countless hours together as he grew up just going through wheaties. Quality time we frequently talk about today. That kid just about had "Looking through cents" memorized.

My younger kids have fun with them too, albeit at a different level. One likes cents, but prefers world coins, one likes silver more than copper, one only wants dinosaurs and animals, and the other just wants to eat them. I probably have 15 or so more years of taking them all through sorting wheaties, which to me is priceless.

the above folks summed it up. people call me all the time asking about wheat cents where say a 1918 will show 45c in vf , or a 1927 in vf will be 30c etc

I tell em I buy all wheats at 3c each except for like the 09-s thru 15-s 14-d, 22's 24-d, 31-s, etc. I don't even pay for the 26-s unless it were xf or better. I will pay higher for nice early teens like in au or BU 20's etc.

Yep, 2 to 3 cents each is right on.

My local shop pays more for 1929 and earlier wheats.

For the record, turned them in today and got .025 for the VF/XF no problem ones and the dealer would not even take the corroded ones for .01 like the one on the right shown in my 12/27 post. he wouldn't even give me .01 for them LOL
