Not a fan of the black as it makes me wonder if the coin was lighted prior to submission or even PCGS's restoration dept?

This wasn't dipped in full strength dipping solution but a highly diluted dip with a far greater mix ratio of distilled water.

This allows for repeated dips until the desired results are achieved without having the coin look blast white or dipped out.

I agree, the black stuff would concern me too. I'm a bit surprised that it stickered.

I don't think there's any question the dime was dipped. And I'd guess that it was important to saving the coin. Black toning is near terminal and over time it will etch the surface.

I love the meaty look of the coin. I'm sure it's lustrous too. Great grade. Well done!

I think the reference to lack of auction results was for the specific grade of AU58, not the Large Date 1814 Dime in general.... Just MHO.

That's a nice, sharp looking coin! The darker toning isn't an issue for me, but I can see where others may not like it.

    Thanks for the responses everyone!!

The Black isnt really as bad as it seems, and almost completely disappears when tilted at an angle. The luster is gorgeous and strong still, the coin doesnt have a dipped out look or i would not have touched it. The auction result reference was more for the au58 grade which has not seen an example since 2006...over 8 years ago!

    Good looking coin vbowling!

I'm not put off by the darker toning and light centers. It looks like a lustrous example of a tough date. Where are all the nice bust dimes from 1809-1825? There are lots in the '30s it seems.

My point wasn't that it was dipped (of course it was), it was that the heavy tone was too far gone to be removed nore would you want it to be with what often lies underneath such tone.

The last one I've seen with that kind of black toning turned in the holder within a few months - it had been Cloroxed

Not the case with this example however potassium chloride is a old time doctoring treatment used to darken silver and will etch the surfaces. You can find pre 1840's coinage with this false look in TPG holders at any major show and the best way to spot it is around the stars with a loupe. Another giveaway is if there's any handling oil remaining on a treated coin as it will only affect the degreased surfaces.
