Does anyone know what a tracking code that starts with "VG" means? I never saw it before.....

TRACKING INFORMATION:
CP numbers are used for internal reference and customs clearance. VG & VA numbers are used to transmit evidence of successful delivery back the US Postal Service. Though these numbers can be used for official inquiries (PS Form 542) should an article be lost or significantly delayed, this number is NOT a tracking number (like you might receive with DHL, FedEx or UPS), and they generally cannot be used to view real-time information (progress scans, expected delivery times, etc.) on the USPS website. However, the number can be used to verify a package has been shipped, and that it has been delivered. Visit the USPS Website for more information.
above from HERE
If over $200, they might make you sign for it, but it won't be tracked.
The PO clerks have a habit of telling people that a over $200 package only needs the insurance label, but that's not true when it comes to ebay.
Edited to add: As Ms M said its an insurance label prefix.

<< <i>I was curious if it was a "sign for" code....thanks for the reply's... >>
While some types of mail require signature such as Registered, there is no single prefix set of numbers used to indicate signature required. That info is embedded in the bar code and seen by delivery personnel when scanned. The presence of a bar code tells them to scan. Sometimes "signature required" will also get printed on a self generated shipping label as a reminder.

<< <i>I once had an almost disaster with mail delivery. I was home waiting for delivery of coins that needed a signature. I knew it was out for delivery by tracking the box. Mail carrier didn't come to the door at the usual time. So about 5 pm I went down to the mail boxes (I live in a condo). Inside my box was an "Attempted Delivery" slip. Huh?? There was no attempted delivery. I looked to the right and saw a box on top of our package delivery lockers (carrier leaves a numbered key in your box so you can retrieve your parcel with out a trip to the post office from the numbered locker) It was my box! I almost had a heart attack. And there were available parcel lockers that would have held the box. >>
sounds like you also need a box at the post office for those important items that you order.

I thought they did away with insurance tracking numbers.

<< <i>I don't understand their reasoning the just because the package is scanned that it is delivered to the correct address. >>
It's just an assumption that their system works.
The best place to start is with your mail carrier to see if he remembers leaving it on your porch or with a neighbor.
But they handle tons of mail, so if it got scanned as delivered that means they had the package in their hands at one point in time, but it may not have made it in your hands.
if and when he delivered my package. The postal carrier remembers delivering it at 3PM on the day of question when according to the scan
it was delivered at !PM. Pay Pal dismissed my complaint because the package was scanned
but at the wrong time. I get lots of packages and I don't believe the accuracy of this postal carriers memory a month after the incident. The only place I have to go now is a final appeal to the Postal Service. It has been over two months and the package still has not turned up. The package
was not a coin or anything valuable to anyone else but me. I would think someone would have turned it in by now.

You should have been talking to your carrier the next day.

I got one today and it showed multiple scans along the route.

That is an incorrect statement. Your insurance label IS indeed your tracking number, and entering the tracking label in the USPS website will show you multiple scans along the way.
Edit: I see Jeremy already indicated the same thing. My bad...
