Clint Eastwood ruining a 1916 Merc.?

In the movie ," Escape from Alcatraz", what if the dime he used was the valuable 1916 or the 1941/2? The real reason why I posted this is the question, can silver be welded that easy as in the movie?

I know that you can use a 1982 or back cent and a car battery to do emergency spot welds.

The escape was in 1962, which hardly guarantees that he used a mercury dime, which had ceased production 17 years earlier. And beware of "factual" movie re-creations, which are notorious for making stuff up. Look at this photo of crude digging tools discovered after the actual escape:

Doesn't look like any welding on that stuff. I vote that it's pure Hollywood malarkey.

Yeah, I guess even if it was a clad dime, copper dust would weld also right? Maybe not? Like mentioned earlier, Hollywood addition for theatrics!
